Hi,
Does someone collect vintage CPUs ?

If it can run fortnite it's not vintage

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Haha. Probably some of us. I tend to collect older CPUs that I can still put to use, it really depends on your definition of "vintage" though, not everyone counts years and generations in the same way.

What ya got?

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

That discounts pretty much every "vintage" CPU I have, going back to the 775 Pentium 4's. I wouldn't trust a Socket 478 Pentium 4 with fork knife but the 775 ones would probably do it.

Vintage means older than 20 years
I got a few (hundreds). Long story. 🙂

The worst part is that the further into the 2020s we get, the worse that "Vintage is 20 years or older" thing makes me feel. I've got Athlon XPs and Athlon 64s that are just entering their "Vintage" phase by that metric. That means around 2025-2026 my Core2s will be considered "Vintage" and I guarantee you I can run Crysis and Fortnite on those.

Well, the higher end Athlon 64s are still quite usable. Eg, the Athlon 64 x2 6000+ I have - beats some of my Core 2 Duos, but uses 125 watts.

No kidding, it's crazy how good those CPUs were for their time. Even the single core ones were absolute powerhouses at the time.

I will get myself an FX one at some point to experiment with. I still have my original high end S939 board, and she works well. Currently have an X2 4800+ that I bought in.... '04 I think. But I would like to get an FX-55 or FX-60 if possible, but they're still expensive. Like Core2 EE on release day expensive.

The Athlon 64 3200+ is one of my best overclockers, actually. Can push some ridiculous speeds on that chip, despite it not even being unlocked.

The best part, my collection mostly contains CPUs from 197x-199x
If it's from 200x - it should be something special like engineering sample
My problem is the lack of time. And the fact that I moved from Ukraine to Canada 8 years ago.
I miss electronics flea markets 🙂 I could build a rocket there.
It's boring just to check ebay for chips I don't have
Same as go to to Costco for fish instead of go fishing

I grew up with a lot of those parts, building 486 DX2s and Pentium Pro systems. While they were amazing for their time, I wouldn't even bother playing with one now to be honest. I have Slot 1 Pentium II hardware that I keep on hand for when I really need to wax nostalgic, but that's as old as I keep now.

I have things like my original Voodoo 3 2000 that will probably never leave my hands and my original Athlon Thunderbird (socket A) and the new-to-me Slot 7 Thunderbird setup I scavenged, but I got rid of a lot of my 386/486/Pentium stuff years ago and haven't looked back.

I don't collect for the sake of collecting though, I collect hardware that I can test, use and push. I like to make things do stuff they're not supposed to 🤣

Bought for my mum's retro PC so that she can have my Sempron 2800+, 1GB DDR and FX 5700 with minimal fuss - the Asrock K7VT4A+.

It, my SE440BX-2 and Gigabyte 6VXC&-4X have caps on the way with the larger caps for the 440BX arriving first (giant cans with extremely high ripple current rating unlike for the Asrock board)

I'd have the Asus A7N8X-X nForce2

instead of the Asrock if the store hadn't made a mistake with their inventory - and I was happy that they had made the mistake as I'd learned just after purchasing that the nForce2 chipset sucks for PCI soundcards within DOS. Besides, it means that someone else gets a working board while I get to save another from becoming e-waste and I actually prefer using boards that I've repaired (even if in the odd case a board develops allergies to using DMA with ODD).

My first computer was a ZX81 that my uncle picked up on a trip to New Hampshire, Sinclair was selling them mail order or cheaper at the warehouse in NH.

He also got a replacement membrane keyboard so I could build my own keyboard with real keys.  I cut out and glued the pads from the spare one onto a mechanical keyboard I build from junk keyboards they were throwing out where my uncle worked.  That is what the 25 pin connector hanging out the front is for, wires soldered onto the motherboard where the membrane keyboard plugs in.
