Out with the RX 570, and in with the 1660 Ti. Looking forward to a decent bump in PPD for roughly the same wattage as before  ?

I suspect a whole less wattage than before. You’ll be lucky if that card draws more than 120W

Ok, so the new card doesn't seem to want to fold. Just stuck with a WU ready to go, but displays 'Ready' and won't respond if I click 'fold'.

Is this a driver issue? It's a 14163 WU, and the Nvidia drivers are the latest (430.86). If anybody has any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.

If refreshing the drivers and reinstalling the clients don’t help then post the office file please

Make sure you’ve deleted all the AMD driver then try a clean install of the Nvidia Driver then uninstall and reinstall the folding client first recording your passkey, username and Team ID.

sometime a DDU is required.

I noticed OpenCL is not ticked in GPU-Z. Is it supposed to be?

I've unistalled the AMD stuff, installed Gefore Exp drivers, then reinstalled the Folding client, but still no luck ?

Yes, I think opencl is a requirement. The logs should show that as an error if it’s required but not present.

perhaps amd drivers include it and nvidia does not

Whilst the 570 was rated at 150W TDP, at standard settings it only drew about 118W.

Try setting folding slot index for GPU if at default of -1 to 0 or 1

This is most likely caused by a file being left by the AMD driver, trust me I swap cards enough.

You have to DDU both drivers and then reinstall the NV driver.

@mattheginger make sure to restart between each process and do a client reinstall after you have done it all.

Uninstall client->DDU AMD->DDU Nvidia->install Nvidia->install FAH

So I tried the DDU Nvidia and AMD strategy, but no luck. Then I read that it should be done in safe mode... and bob's your uncle! Success!

so after running the vouwfabriek server for a couple of days it seems to cap out at 450-500K PPD on the 290's. i'm still figuring out where to actually check the 'PPD' on the BOINC tasks it's running ?

it's pretty reasonable, tough a GPU upgrade is definitely something i would want to do sooner or later.

For most BOINC tasks grab yourself some Vegas, for folding a couple RTX 2060s or 1080tis for best effect imo.

Hey I know the feeling!!!

I just have been very lucky finding deals tbh.

PS you can get some great deals on use Vega cards atm. But these are not the best for folding to say the least

yeah probably sticking with the 290's for now, if i blow even more of my money on tech stuff the missus will not be happy!?

i'll want to upgrade to hopefully 1080Ti's next, tough that's all in the future for now.

Do any of you folding folk get significant coil whine with your cards? My (one week old) 1660 Ti seems to have have pretty terrible whine with most WU's, so much so that I'm considering returning it.

**posting this here, as opposed to the general hardware forums, as I figure folders are more likely to hear the whine running max load without headphones, game audio etc etc...

my titan x has incredibly bad coilwhine, tough i overclocked the core a little bit and it went down a lot, so it's bearable now.

Yeah I did contemplate raising or lowering the power usage, as that could potentially move it out of the coil frequency that is causing the resonance. But On the other hand, I'm also thinking that it really is also a 'fault', and I shouldn't really have to tolerate that on a brand new card.

well, file for a RMA and see if you can get a new one. it's always worth the chance imo. just think about the PPD you'll miss out on while you're waiting for the new card ?

  • 3 weeks later...

I've woken up today to an update_core error, and no GPU folding. 0x21 core, and doesn't seem to matter which WU.

I've tried deleting the work folder, then deleting the cores folder, then after no luck I reinstalled. Still no joy...

Anybody else experienced this?

I had the same on my server. I deleted the slot and the re-added it. It worked for me again afterwards.
