Zeketo

Do you pay tax if you are a canadian buyer on massdrop.

I went through everything on paypal and it didn't seem to add tax to the cost only $50 usd shipping fees

PS: I live in Ontario and the tax is crazy

You should include their price and any kind of history of past sales so we can determine whether or not we want to buy them.

1) Seriously?  You think 13% sales tax is 'crazy'?

2) While an American shipper has no responsibilty or even means to charge Canadian sales tax, your order may still be charged Duty as it passes through customs.

I tried all the way before the last step on Paypal, no duty or tax is added.

If there will be duty charged, you likely won't see it until it's time for delivery.  At which point you'll have to pony up the cash or they won't deliver it.  And frankly, I'm -pretty sure- that a whole computer monitor will get dinged for duty by customs.

I've only ordered like six things off Massdrop because shipping is fairly horrendous, but I've never had to pay duty; granted, most things I've ordered were small and under $200.

Tax is crazy? Really?! You should come to Quebec. 15% sales tax! And income tax.. ouch.. well at least it is easy to file them. Take an envelope, put all the money you earned in the year inside, keep 20$, and ship it.

I actually don't know for Massdrop. If it is shipped from the US, and is more than 19.99$, expect duty fees. And those are high, as not only you have the the sales taxes, but you also have other fees. If it shipped, via UPS, or FedEx.. oh boy, you have like 30$+ "administration fee", because they have their own staff to handle duties process.

Yea.. you just got it on reverse... It is  5% of all the money you make per year is what you get.

But seriously though. It is 15% sales tax, and income tax is 40-45% depending on how much you make, assuming you make less than 100k, and more than 10k. Very roughly. Plus so many other taxes on everything... you don't want a home, basically.

Anyway, I am exaggerating, but Quebec is the province we are the most taxed, and we are in the ranks of the regions with the highest tax in the world. We are far from the top, but we are there. But check my edit on my past post for Massdrop.

Yea.. enjoy that 5%... you pass from a province that was counting every penny spent, to over spending, and wasting money left and right since oil was being extracted on a large scale. And now that the oil extraction reduces, reducing the economy of Alberta you can't return back to the old ways. And there is no coming back. Ontario and Quebec says hi! on that :)

Maybe, maybe not.

Depends who they use as the shipper, what the value is, and if the CBSA decides to look at your package or not. If they ship via UPS or FedEx, you'll also get dinged for a handling and brokerage fee. You should always bank on paying tax on an item, and potentially duty. With a monitor it's tricky. If they classify it as a TV, then you'll have to pay duty. If they don't, then you won't have to pay duty.

You can use this site as a rough estimate: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/dte-acl/est-cal-eng.html

If you feel you've been unjustly charged duty, there's a form you can fill out to get that money back. You have to hunt down the HS code yourself though. It's available in PDF form from the CBSA website.

No responsibility or right ;) Which is why I was so annoyed the Louqe Kickstarter had VAT included in the price. Still so salty.

Haha, I was so glad when BC got rid of HST. I paid a lot more with it than without.

The 13% is just the sales tax, you have to pay import fees and duty on top of that.

So, uhh... Let's break these items down a bit more.

The first monitor, XG2530, is $349 USD and you said there would be $50 USD in shipping.  So $399 USD which converts directly to $505 CAD and that's a STRAIGHT conversion.  Your payment processor will opt to PROFIT on the exchange rate and charge you a bit more so it'll probably be closer to $515-$520 CAD. You can find Amazon listings that are in that price range: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/B071DTCPP3/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1519695109&sr=8-1&keywords=XG2530&condition=new

Or even $479 here from PC Canada: https://www.pc-canada.com/item/XG2530.html?utm_source=shopbot&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopbot

The second monitor, the XG2701, $284.99+$50 USD wold be $424.71 CAD after exchange, again, that's the most OPTIMAL conversion and you'll not actually get such a good rate.  Probably more like $435-$440 I'd guess.  Meanwhile, that thing is $425 on Amazon with free shipping: https://www.amazon.ca/ViewSonic-XG2701-FreeSync-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B01A0ZRQTM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519695510&sr=8-1&keywords=XG2701&dpID=51uC6YEfMFL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The OP should maybe be less concerned with taxes and duty and more concerned that the cost of shipping basically kills the deal on it's own.

the second one is good if it can sneak out of the customs which it probably wont. 420 after tax is actually a great deal, but won't happen. It's that time of the year that you wish black friday comes earlier or later. 240hz 1ms monitor was $399 /144hz  $329 on black friday and how did I miss those
