i5 6500 vs i7 3770..which is better for gaming

Pls i want to know if the i5 6500 is better than the i7 3770 in gaming and if is a good idea to upgrade from i7 3770 to i5 6500 for gaming only

It is slightly better for games that require not as many threads, but it is not worth the upgrade price. Save up more money and go for a more meaningful upgrade as new gens roll out.

No it ain't worth it, I don't know why the i5 6500 specifically you'd be better off saving for an i5 8400 or even Ryzen+ refresh on April.

No, don´t "upgrade". The i7 has 8 threads which these days is better for gaming

The 6500 has a better IPC, but that is offset by the 3770's higher clock speed.  On top of that the 3770 has hyperthreading and can be overclocked a little (somewhere in the low 4GHz range, not sure if it's 4.2 or 4.3).

 

I'd suggest waiting for Ryzen 2.

i7 3770 is quite a bit better than the i5 6500.

If you already have the i7 3770, just keep it and later upgrade to something like i5 8400 or Ryzen 5 refresh.

Not a difference significant enough to call as an upgrade even. Does save some power, but not worth it.

With Z77/Z68/P68 mobo that is, and 400MHz overclock on each turbo bin.

With a Z77 motherboard for instance you can set it to its highest Turbo speed through the Multicore Enhancement setting and then overclock the Turbo by 400MHz, giving you a nice performance uplift so yeah, the 6500 isn't any better for gaming tbh, I'd actually assume it's worse.

 

For OP, don't upgrade yet - wait for Ryzen's refresh that's coming this quarter or gather money for something like an i5-8400/R5 1600 which will actually give you a performance benefit ;)

A 3770k isn't good for much gaming. I don't know what play but it does do the job without bringing down my old gpu.

 

I don't feel like buying a board, cpu and ram especially with the price hike. Would rather keep my old gear and keep at it.
