Canada Health Care vs USA - Explain?

Frankieanime158

I had my appendix removed when I was 17.  The cost to myself and/or my parents? $0

How long did wait for my surgery?  Got it the day I went in.

I'm not even sure if my dad even had medical insurance with his employer at the time.

So glad I'm Canadian.

Right, and the NHS and other single payer systems can be accessed by everybody.   So no, Medicade is not an analog to systems.  You can't say 'We have that but we call it Medicade'.  Medicade is certainly a start but it doesn't apply to all residents in the United States so you can't compare the two.

Medicare is old peoples insurance. It was created along with Social Security to be a safety net for when your old. There is also medicaid which is poor peoples insurance. Its provided by the states and provides people like me who are lower income with health care. As you said you have to qualify for these. They are not offered to every one. Unless you qualify you have to pay thousands of dollars for insurance, or go with out., or hope your employer will provide something.

Also I gotta point out. Republicans would have social security and medicare die if they could. Because the rich dont feel the 99% are entitled to anything. So while it might work out for you now, dont get too conformable. These funds are running out of money, eventually I think both Social security and medicare will be a thing of the past.

I hope you don't act like this in IRL because no dude is going to put up with it especially from a trans person that doesn't pass at all, it's a good way to get yourself punched in the face. You can pretend all you want but there are no private insurers in Canada and you can't pay out of pocket for medical expenses so I fail to see where you think you'd be able to keep them on life support if Daddy gov decided to stop paying.

1) I find it interesting that you didn't quote the actual post I made where I said outright that you can pay for long term life support in Canada

Yeah, that post, why did you quote all that other stuff but not this post?

Also, no private insurers in Canada?

You better go tell these private supplementary healthcare insurance companies in Canada that they don't exist, that way they can close up shop because they are spending a lot of money leasing office space while doing nothing. :o

I even get supplementary insurance as a benefit from my employer.

Um, if you qualify as disabled you can get on medicare.  It's meant for old people and the disabled.

The point is, I dont feel medicare is anything like national health care. It was made as a safety net for the old a disabled. National healthcare would be that it was provided to every one, not just two groups of people. Yeah, you can get on it for now. Wait till is defunded. Because they cant afford to pay for it. Both funds are running out of money. By 2025 people on social security will only get 75% benefits. Even with medicare most people cant afford healthcare, they have to carry other insurance they cant afford and pay for visits and drugs they cant afford. Many old people go with out meds, just so they can buy food.

We are what we called "The greatest nation on the earth" but we cant provide decent health care. Its sad really............

I don't know.. I've known a good number of Muslims in my life.  Some are really good friends of mine that I've known since high school.  I'm 34 and they have yet to bomb anyone.  One is even an airline pilot.  He prefers landing on runways vs into the side of buildings contrary to popular belief...

Glad to see there are good people still living in this country. Im getting sick of all the racist and bigots. I some times dont recognize this country. Hell if it were easy to immigrate, id consider it, somewhere else thats better.

It's pretty sad because only a racist American could see a discussion about the differences between Healthcare in the United States and Canada and think 'THIS SEEMS LIKE AN APPROPRIATE TIME TO BRING UP MUSLIMS!' o.O

Over 50 years of cold war propaganda will do that to a country.

Then again, if Americans were really unhappy with their system, they would do something about it.

I think many Americans ARE unhappy with their system. Otherwise there wouldn't have been such a drive to create Obamacare (ACA), nor would there have been such a drive to change/repeal it.

I think the problem is that no one can agree on what to do.

Honestly, I think the simple and obvious solution is to expand Medicaid to the entire population. Yes the cost of running the program would go up. But cost efficiency savings would be able to take care of a lot of that extra cost. Then just increase taxes marginally to pay for it (AHHHHHH SCARY TAX INCREASES!), and boom. Now most citizens actually have more money, because the tiny tax increase is far less than their premium and out of pocket costs.

Seriously, the average Premium cost for an unsubsidized American is around $4000 per year, and then the average out of pocket cost is another $1300 on top of that.

So in a year, an American will, on average, spend $5300 on healthcare, out of pocket. And that doesn't count the taxes that they already pay for healthcare.

I know some Muslims, and have known quite a lot over the years (used to work with a bunch), and I can confidently say that none of them are ruining anything. They're all really nice people for the most part, just like any other ethnicity or group of people.

Americans like having people not being able to pay for healthcare the same way they like having children killed in mass shootings They actively defend these things (see some posts in this very thread).

They know fully well how to fix these things but they refuse to. If they were unhappy enough with their current system, they would do something about it, but they don't. They are comfortable with the way things are.

Neither of which can agree with the other.

And then, on top of that, there are disagreements within both parties.

I mean, the Republicans controlled both the House and Senate in 2017, and they COULDN'T ram through a replacement for the ACA. Either the replacement wasn't going far enough in ripping up the system and making it more privatized and less regulated, or they were going too far.

You must not be from here. The rich control every thing. The government and the media. Most people are struggling to the point, they dont have time to pay attention to whats going on in the world. So most people are not educated enough to make informed decisions at the polls. Doesnt help that the Democrats and Republicans control the media. So I guess the dumbing down of America has been success. Because these people believe anything a politician says. Trump "Ill drain the swamp" yeah howd that work out? Still waiting for that to happen.

I REALLY wish the US had universal healthcare. I have pretty good insurance for $130/month; no copay for PCP or specialist, generics cost nothing and brand-name costs $30 flat, 20% coinsurance for ER/ambulatory/urgent care with no deductible, plus vision with one frame and lens fixing for no cost a year. Dental insurance sucks though; you can be seen for a wisdom tooth extraction and will have to wait six months for the surgery.

OK so this thread has gone from civil to less than civil to the beginnings of a political discussion.

Instead of going through and completely clearing it all out I'm locking this before it spirals to far.
