Ebay GPUs, whats the story behind these?

suchamoneypit
Go to solution Solved by iamdarkyoshi,

I've got a thread on these that I need to update.

I do have the fake 970 on hand as we speak. It hasn't been tested though

example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX970-GDDR5-192Bit-PCI-Express-Video-Graphics-Card-1GB-HDMI/202151553970?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D47300%26meid%3D188961609da44b198ce62c90cb39582b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D202182675154%26itm%3D202151553970&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

How does this cards performance compare to a proper 970? Can it be used for mining? Whats the story behind these "stripped down" GPUs with low memory? Stuff like this for every main gpu out there for nvidia at least.

They're basically just BS. Some cheapo card that's been flashed to display as a different card and maybe some packaging. Or sometimes just a completely different card that doesn't even try to be a different card.

It appears that particular card is from the future as well, as it repeatedly states that it uses DDR5 RAM.

The description as a whole is fantastic:

"*Super low consumption and calorific value."

"Warm Tips:This item is not the original one"

"*Color: As pictures show"

"Note: The real color of the item may be slightly different from the pictures shown on website"

When you get a chance would you be able to download minergate and tell me what it mines (H/s) at mining Monero ? Extremely curious.

I'm sure it'll be at best a 550Ti's performance.

They don't have 970 dies, they have dies from 550Tis and stuff, and the memory is almost always faked. You're lucky to get 1GB on a "4GB" card

Lower-end card (usually very old but power efficient enough to pass as a newer card) with a BIOS hack to make it appear as a GTX 970 in GPUZ and applications like that.

I dunno, this new generation of VRAM called GRRRRRRRRAM sounds pretty aggressive!

no it makes you appear as uneducated as there is no tone of voice online. its from china so you have to expect google translate or a variant of it was used for all the text you see on the post.

they are trying to say that it has low power consumption by that line. and the calorific value part is more then likely a translation error saying something that it has good power consumption again. you know how the chinese sellers are.

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm both relived and disappointed to find out this graphics card is, in fact, not from the future as I had thought in my first post.

Wishful thinking:

The bitcoin mining industry gets hoodwinked by this GPU.  After preordering 10s of thousands of them, their capital is tied up and the rest of the GPU market prices fall to MRSP.   Gamers can have their cake and eat it to.

I wonder if we can get Amazon to try to source a highly energy efficient and cheap bit coin mining card.
Amazon would not only profit from this, they would create a new custom build pc gamer renaissance.  Until prices drop, I can not afford to build.

It's not abuse of the return policy if the seller is intentionally lying and sell fake products.

I've thought about why a company like NVIDIA or AMD wouldn't make specialized chips, then keep them to themselves.

Complete monopoly and dominance over every other miner in existence, giving complete control of all crypto bringing in insane profits. Or people would see the corruptness in it and crypto value would drop.

Crypto currencies fluctuates by the second.  In that second, it has a value between 0 to infinity.  You have a better chance with Schrödinger's cat.  "Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, ".. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrödinger's_cat).
