How do I explain to a friend looking to get into PC gaming in easy wording that they do not NEED an i7 for Battlefield 1

Be an epic troll and buy him a ryzen 7 instead of core i7, and dont tell him, and see if he notices.

He's looking at pre-builts only right now which is where I'm trying to get him away from an 8700k prebuilt. plenty of other better deals I'm trying to hunt down for him.

Tell him that building his own PC will allow him to choose exactly what goes in his PC, it's pretty easy, and that it can be way less expensive than buying a prebuilt.

thats hard to recommend when DDR4 is stupid expensive and a gtx 1060 is going for $600.

I'm just trying to break the stigma to him that "I need the 8700k because BF1 says I need an i7". Its more so trying to save him money as to be honest he doesnt have that much to waste.

1. You're not helping them save too much by getting a i5

2. Not everyone buys a PC strictly just for gaming.

3. It's their money not yours, so they can spend it how ever they want

4. You don't want to be that person who gets blame later on down the road, for forcing them to get a product they don't want, and now it's not performing to their needs.

Hyper-Threading in the best case scenario improves the core performance by 30%, it is as @Jurrunio mentioned virtual, you simply create 2 paths of data into the core instead of a single path, so you have 2 lines of data with Hyper-Threading decreasing any possible latency to near zero which increases the core performance, however you still only have 1 core processing every thing.

So count it by threads is pointless, you count for cores and then if the processors have the same core count, use threads as an untie point, like for real just go see why 4c/4t is better than 2c/4t.

Why are you trolling? We are specifically talking about mainstream desktop CPUs, I even distinction Haswell from Coffee Lake as cores not only increased in count but also gotten better, reason why I wrote present day cores against outdated ones.

I remember you being far more serious than a pathetic 1 short line trolling attempt to have someone look bad while trying to actually be helpful to OP's question, so far I have read you've not truly addressed OP but only kept "correcting" people in the thread looking for a taunt that works.

yeah but if the insists on an i7 then let him have it - it looks like logic and explaining does not help with this guy so don't bother because ....

because that is what will happen when there is a problem. he will blame EVERYTHING on not getting an i7. regardless of the problem.

them low FPS are not because he's trying to run AAA games in 4k on a 1050ti - it's because he didn't get that i7.

if he buys a prebuilt - tell him that you will not provide tech service. because that's the responsibility of whoever sold him that prebuilt.

8T vs 6T

8T > 6T

Assuming same architecture and clock, for most things 6c6t will be faster than 4c8t. In the best base, 4c8t could equal 6c6t.

Best case improvement I've seen from HT/SMT is 50%. Without looking it up, I think even Cinebench manages more than 30%.

i5 8600k is faster than 4790k. Its equal to 7700k I see ur friend is noob. That case he dont need 8700k But if hes planning to use that CPU for more than 3-4 years its good to have 8700k If he for some reason like and want to play competitively then 8700k is a must.If not 8600k is the best option for him.
BTW I see 8t >6t. 7700k is = 8600k 6 REAL CORES ARE BETTER THAN 4 REAL + 4 VIRTUAL MOST OF THE TIMES. In gaming real cores are better.

It sounds like you're thinking logically from a budget that probably can't deem it necessary if what he's playing its BF1 -thats the message i'm hearing but most seem to be i7 elitist get him the i7 why because hes a gamer not all games need an i7 i think the point the op made was clear i5-8600k will be more then adequate still needs to buy other hardware like the gpu and those aren't cheap these days.
