Apple bringing $38B back to US and A

Source 1: posted by Dan Castellaneta https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/887079-apple-to-contribute-350bn-to-the-us-economy-in-job-creation/

  • The new Tax rules in the US dictate that income from global sales must be repatriated at a one-time rate of 15.5%

  • Companies like Apple have tonnes of offshore income that will now be taxed

    • Under the old system, income made abroad was taxable at 35%, but only when brought back the the US

    • Therefore, companies would keep that income overseas and use it to make acquisitions for example

    • They would only bring the money back to the US when there was a “repatriation tax holiday” - a time when the repatriation tax rate drops due to a special circumstance, like an incentive introduced by newly elected leadership

    • Now, all global income is being repatriated and future global income will be taxed at around 10%

  • The new tax rules cause Apple to re-structure how it moves funds around, and they claim they will contribute $350 billion to the US economy over the next 5 years.

  • Apple expects to invest over $30 billion in capital expenditures in the US over the next five years and create over 20,000 new jobs through hiring at existing campuses and opening a new one.

    • “The new campus will initially house technical support for customers. The location of this new facility will be announced later in the year.

  • Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of the industry's first 16-gigabit GDDR6 memory for use in advanced graphics processing for graphics cards, automotive, network and artificial intelligence systems.

    • "By introducing next-generation GDDR6 products, we will strengthen our presence in the gaming and graphics card markets and accommodate the growing need for advanced graphics memory in automotive and network systems."

  • Built on Samsung's advanced 10-nm class process technology,

    • offering 30% manufacturing productivity gain compared to the 20 nm 8Gb GDDR5.

  • comes in a 16 Gb density (2GB),

    • doubles that of the company's 20-nanometer 8Gb GDDR5 memory.

  • performs at an 18 Gbps pin speed with data transfers of 72 GBps,

    • more than two-fold increase over 8 Gb GDDR5 with its 8 Gbps pin speed.

  • operates at 1.35V to lower energy consumption approximately 35 percent below the 1.55V GDDR5

AT&T under pressure to cut all ties with Huawei

Source 1: posted by Nena360 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/887602-att-under-pressure-to-cut-all-ties-with-huawei/

Source 2: https://www.androidauthority.com/att-huawei-us-5g-cricket-wireless-deal-830545/

  • CES 2018 was meant to herald a new beginning for Huawei in the US as the company had nailed down a deal with AT&T to launch the Mate 10 Pro in the US via a carrier for the first time...

    • carrier channels amount to 90% of smartphone sales in the US.

  • ...but it fell through at the last minute, forcing Huawei to announce that its latest flagship, would only come to the US unlocked and without a carrier partner.

  • Now, a new report has now suggested that US lawmakers are pushing AT&T to cut all commercial ties with the Huawei over national security concerns.

  • Senators and House members are encouraging AT&T to ditch any potential plans to work with the Huawei on standards for its 5G network.

    • AT&T is expected to roll out its 5G network by the end of 2018 and is competing with Verizon to become the first carrier to offer the high-speed service to US consumers.

  • Senate and House intelligence committees sent a letter to the FCC raising concerns over Huawei’s “alleged ties to the Communist Party as well as China’s intelligence and security services.”

Changes to the YouTube Partner Program

Source 1: posted by hey_yo https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/886845-update-youtube-is-tightening-rules-of-monetization-further-requires-4000-hours-of-annual-viewing-1000-subscribers-humans-will-now-review-videos/

Source 2: https://youtube-creators.googleblog.com/2018/01/additional-changes-to-youtube-partner.html

  • Youtube is strengthening its requirements for monetization so spammers, impersonators, and other bad actors can’t hurt the ecosystem or take advantage of creators, while continuing to reward those who make the platform great.

  • Back in April of 2017, Youtube introduced a YPP eligibility requirement of 10,000 lifetime views. Now they think they need a higher standard.

  • Now, the eligibility requirement for monetization is 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers.

  • “We’ve arrived at these new thresholds after thorough analysis and conversations with creators like you.”

  • These higher standards will help prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing which can hurt revenue for everyone.

  • On February 20th, 2018, Youtube will implement this threshold across existing channels on the platform, to allow for a 30 day grace period.

    • On that date, channels with fewer than 1,000 subs or 4,000 watch hours will no longer be able to earn money on YouTube.

      • At this time, they will be paid what they’ve already earned based on our AdSense policies

    • When they reach 1,000 subs and 4,000 watch hours they will be automatically re-evaluated under strict criteria to ensure they comply with policies.

    • New channels will need to apply, and their application will be evaluated when they hit these milestones.

  • Though these changes will affect a significant number of channels, 99% of those affected were making less than $100 per year in the last year, with 90% earning less than $2.50 in the last month

  • “After thoughtful consideration, we believe these are necessary compromises to protect our community.”

      • Users who paid via the "Credit Card via PayPal" method should NOT be affected.

      • Users who paid via PayPal should NOT be affected.

    • OnePlus has contacted potentially affected users via email.

AMD sued over Spectre flaw

Source 2: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/17/amd_investors_sue_over_chip_flaw_silence/

  • AMD stands accused of "artificially inflating" its stock price by not making public a CPU design flaw known as Spectre, according to a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of investors.

  • As evidence of hiding the knowledge of the chip vulnerabilities, the complaint highlighted AMD's end-of-2016 statement, as well as its Q1, Q2 and Q3 filings.

    • These all contain the same paragraph warning about the general risk of hackers and potential consequences of attacks, the place where investors would expect to read about fundamental issues with the company's chips, but did not.

  • While not explicitly mentioned in the filing, the Google Project Zero blog stated it informed AMD about Spectre on 1 June 2017.

TWiT suing Twitter

Source 1: posted by Aluminium Tech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/887272-twitter-could-be-banned-from-distributing-audio-video-content-twit-llc-vs-twitter-inc-lawsuit/

Source 2: https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/16/twit-is-suing-twitter-alleging-breach-of-contract-and-copyright-infringement/

  • TWiT, officially known as This Week in Tech, is suing Twitter.

  • The audio and video media platform alleges breach of written contract, breach of oral agreement, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage, and trademark infringement.

  • Some years ago, TWiT’s Leo Laporte reached out to Twitter co-founder Evan Williams about the similarity of the two company’s names.

  • Because Twitter and TWiT were relatively different, Laporte and Williams agreed to allow the trademarks to coexist, “conditioned on each company continuing its own unique distribution platform”

  • In 2009, however, Laporte felt concerned that Twitter was going to move in on TWiT’s audio and video. Laporte allegedly reached out to Williams, who told Laporte “we’re not expanding to audio or video under the Twitter brand,”

  • In May 2017, however, Twitter announced its plans to bring original, premium video content to its platform.

  • In July, TWiT’s attorneys demanded that Twitter stop expanding the use of the Twitter trademark.

  • “Since that time, the parties have engaged in communications with the goal of informally resolving this dispute,” the lawsuit states. “These efforts have not resolved the dispute, and Twitter continues its expansion into TWiT’s business in breach of its agreement with Plaintiffs, refuting its representations and promises made, and infringing on Plaintiffs’ intellectual property rights, all to Plaintiffs’ injury.”

Arrests and prison sentences for Chinese PUBG cheaters

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-16/tencent-cracks-down-on-cheats-in-world-s-top-selling-video-game?

  • Ahead of its official Chinese debut this year, the biggest gaming company on the planet has enlisted Chinese police to root out the underground rings that make and sell PUBG cheat software.

  • Tencent and Bluehole have helped law enforcement agents uncover at least 30 cases and arrest 120 people suspected of designing programs that confer unfair advantages like:

    • X-Ray vision

    • auto-targeting

  • Bluehole’s anti-cheats partner, BattlEye, has banned 1.5 million accounts so far for cheating, 6% of the total community.

  • People convicted of disrupting computer networks face five years’ imprisonment or more under Chinese law.

    • in 2010, a couple was fined 3 million yuan and sentenced to nine years for selling cheat software

  • Software rings ingeniously treat the game’s leaderboards like free ad space: eight of PUBG’s top 10 players bear names such as “contact QQ574352672,”

    • through which players can procure cheat software.

    • One vendor offered a 100 yuan ($15) program called “Jue Ying” or extreme shadow that obscures players and grants a birds-eye view of the battleground.

  • “Cheaters mostly drive away new users, and without retaining new users, PUBG won’t be able to consolidate its early success and become a long-lasting hit.”

  • Lifeguards were busy testing a UAV as part of New South Wales' $250,000 shark-spotting strategy when a distress call came in.

  • Within 70 seconds the aerial helper had tracked down two stranded boys 700m offshore in 3m swells

  • It dropped them a flotation pod, which they used to safely make their way to shore

  • The 'Little Ripper' UAVs are packed with supplies including inflatable rafts and GPS beacon, and can fly for two-and-half hours on a single charge.

  • In August, it was reported that the drones were being fitted with AI smarts to map Australia's shark-infested waters.

  • Around 40 Little Rippers were shipped to Australia's Surf Life Saving Clubs last year.

Sounds like an interesting show, I definitely need to make time to listen to these...

They only talked about AT&T, YouTube and Nintendo when I joined, which was about 10 mins in.

I watched the whole thing starting from that, and unless they somehow fired 7-10 more topics in 10 mins, I don't think they talked about anything else.

Also @LinusTech @Slick, why is the WAN show audio have to be very muted? It has persisted for weeks and I wonder why no one seem to have brought this up to your attention? Before I can listen to the WAN show with just my laptop speakers but few weeks ago and today, it's very muted that I have to use headphones and crank up the volume. What gives?

I concur. There was a week I couldn't watch at all because even with Windows and laptop volume cranked it was simply too quiet.

People can turn down the volume if it's too loud for them. I can't increase it past my hardwares maximum. :|

On the topic of why YT changed the YPP, Barnecules has been the only person I've personally heard who has provided a decent explanation of why they did it.

It's a move to try and curb fake bot channels from messing with SEO by repeatedly spamming fake/stolen content onto the platform and therefore taking views away from legitimate channels who won't be uploading anywhere nearly as frequently as bots can.

He reckons the move with essentially kill off bot channels overnight because the bandwidth required for the bots to hit those numbers and get monetised would cost the bot owners more than they'd ultimately make.

He also said that in the end this will help smaller creators, not hinder them, as these bots are currently obscuring many channels from appearing in searches where they otherwise would have done allowing them to get more views and subs and ultimately allowing more real creators to get noticed.

Him & Jay talk about it on their latest Tech Talk from Thursday night.

I'm sorry contracting a phone is a SMART idea? Maybe for phones overpriced like the iPhone 8, Samsung S8 and Pixel 2... It's never been a "smart" idea to contract... Lose the phone? you still owe it, break the phone? Same thing. Then there are cases like Virgin Mobile in canada where you could pay upwards to $1800 for a S8 on contract just to get the "best" initial price... Bell is the same way in one plan requirement for the iPhone 8 costing $100 more than buying outright.

Also when I went onto both AT&T and Verizon sites neither offer $0 phones with contracts in the same way as Canadian companies do, they offer $0 down and 0% for 24/30 months equally the value of the phone, much like a car. So next to top tier overpriced phones contracts will cost you more, maybe only $10 or $20 bucks but sometimes it'll be hundreds of dollars. I was with someone looking at a phone at VM they wanted them to go on the Gold plan and to buy a $400 phone... Someone not knowing the Silver offers the same thing for $40/m less will think it's a good deal and lose out hundreds of dollars. By buying the phone outright you get the best deal now for both price and upgradability, which btw if you wish to upgrade after 1 year you can't sell your phone till you pay it off and pay for the new ones deposit (likely higher unless you cancel and renew then there are fees to that as well)

Contracts are stupid. Thankfully the Gov stepped in to abolish the 3yr bs ones. Plus a contract in a market which is now "crashing" is not the best idea, data is being forced to become cheaper minutes are being forced to become cheaper, the big 3 are slowly going that way but equally attempting to stop it. In 1 years time you might be able to get a plan costing half of what it does now, you also have to include that as a extra cost of a contract too.
