Why waste your money!

Buying new when you can buy old for like literally 75% off the new latest gen price.

I just dont get it. Most people dont even use the FULL capability of their pc.

I cant believe how much prices have dropped for older 4th gen intel cpu pc's.

Then whats a good website to compare cpu's?

I thought that one was decent

I'd rather spend $200 or $300 rather then $1000 any day of the week, all year long.

Because people enjoy having warranties.

Newer boards have better features, and honestly, look a better.

Prices haven't dropped low enough IMO. Take a look at the i3 8100. It's just as good as most older i5's, and ridiculously cheap.

I cant see how a 4th gen intel pc for a couple hundred dollar bills isnt a great deal compared to buying a $1000 newest greatest blah blah blah. AAA titles is why, the fps race.

Because outside of DDR4 pricing, AM4 is just a better platform to have for the long run IMO, and you can get 6c/12t for under $200

Where as you're stuck on 4c/4t or just stuck on an older platform in general.

gen

I'd say the majority of people, the majority of households do not need much more then 4th gen i5 or i7, even if they want their children to play a few nice decent AAA games.

I do agree, its better to spend an extra $100 and buy the i7, so then yes it will be a $300 pc compared to a $1000 but more likely a $1100 pc.

It depends on what you're doing.

Ryzen/Coffelake are an excellent way to go but if you can get a pre-built cheap enough then go for it.

My laptop broke and I'm using an ivy bridge i5 with a GTX 750ti.  Cost me £110 in total and is fine till I build a new computer.

HP said "yeah shipping damage is outside our warranty".

I don't like buying used personally, mainly because to many non-tech people want like 75-90% of what the computer cost when it was new and so the new shit is only like a 100 bucks more and is better overall, besides who cares about cost, the new hardware can pay for itself inside of the first year by using your GPU to mine with. I just ordered 2 more GPU's so I could double my earnings per day, I'll have the computer and the new cards cost covered in 3-4 months at current daily earnings.

Not every country has the same availability.

Believe it or not, there are close to none decent used hardware at a decent price where i live.

Recently i saw a few used 750Tis that were 10 to 20% more expensive than a NEW 1030.

One guy selling a used 5930K at the same price you can buy a NEW 1600X

Its quite sad in south america, you either find Phenoms or overpriced used shit just coins apart from new equivalent pieces.

Listen buddy, I see this a lot.

People will take 2 processors from different generations, usually 2 i5's or 2 i3's and use userbenchmark to compare them.

What they (and you) fail to take into account is the market segmentation of these cpu lines!  There are usually only 3 i7's for the mainstream but half a dozen i3's and a hefty number of i5's

Your example:

4690 (3.3ghz) vs 7400 (3ghz) 1% better

4690 (3.3ghz) vs 7500 (3.4ghz) 10% better

You DIDN'T compare the 4690 to its actual competitor, the 7600.  You compare the fastest locked i5 from fourth gen to the second and third slowest in 7th gen.

4690 (3.3ghz) vs 7600 (3.5ghz) 20% better

Once you compare in the proper product stacks, not just putting best versus worst it is a lot more compelling to upgrade.

i believe you got the wrong price. Here everything has a 50% import tax so "That little" its not actually that little at all.

Your statement implies that a 1600x bnib price is fair, if the price of a 1600x is fair and the same price 5930k outclasses it in every way it's still a good deal.

The argument still stands that people are selling their hardware for pretty much 90% of their new price when it was released for putting that crap "OBO" when you can buy something better just for a bit more while just saving the sales tax. Yeah I have the choice of not buying their stuff but still seeing a used 780 cost less than 960 is a joke.

I'd be lucky to get used hardware for 50% of their old price, it was nice seeing Scrapyard Wars, but really rare to actually get deals that good like a pair of 980 Tis for $500 CAD.

So your line of thinking is because you get a warranty its better to buy new.

I do agree some countries have different markets. Argentina, if you gotta buy new you gotta buy new and within your country. Most people live in North America and Europe and Australia, do they really need to play whatever the best game is at 422fps? Well I say no. If you can afford to waste your money because you are rich, then go for it. I say most people can not afford to waste their money. Spending $500 or $800 on a gpu for gaming, what a waste. People do what they do though. Mining isnt a large percentage of people out in the real world. The people here at LTT will gladly spend parents money without a care. Or blow their month paycheck because they are living with their parents. There is nothing wrong with that. To me its not sane.

Yeah buy an old 4th gen pc for $300 or new for $1000 or $1100. The vast amount of people do not mine, and the majority of people dont need an expensive gpu just for gaming.

I just picked some random cpus.

Quote

4690 to its actual competitor, the 7600

still man, I'd rather pay $300cdn for a used pc then $1100 for a new pc. No one needs to fall for the lie that oh you get a warranty, that is worth $800 increase in price. Or, oh you get better performance, well performance for what? email, internet a few games, big deal. You dont need the latest and greatest. A 4th gen intel can play games just fine. You do not need the newest model. Thats the automotive way of thinking and why people buy new  cars, oh because you get a warranty hahahahahahaha I gotta laugh at that. Do you buy the extra warranty for parts when you buy them new? If so good for you.

My brother makes a shit ton of cash, family cabin out on the lake with pool, shine of parents life, 1080ti, newest intel pc, nice house, nice wheels, kids, this that and the other. He is running around trying to please his boss so he doesnt get fired, so he doesnt lose his 3500sq ft $800k house or miss the alimony payments so the ex doesnt go after the family cabin, so he can travel with his new woman to far off places. So he can give his children the newest shit. Whats the newest Nintendo, hey good for them and Good for him!

How much does one person and his family really need?

My understanding of this conversation was to debate the pros and cons of purchasing old used pc hardware versus new pc hardware.  Consequently, I am concerned about price point, performance, return on investment, compatibility, reliability, and will it not have an annoying discrepancy or deficiency.  When I make a purchase decision, I want it to be the best possible purchase and not to have to repurchase and or feel remorse for my decision.  What ever a person's decision, unless it directly affects me, I should acknowledge their right to chose and move on.

I recently purchased a refurbished laptop.  It is a business class laptop that originally came with Window 8. The LED display has a slight yellow tinge. I think someone must have cleaned the display with an ammonia and or alcohol based CRT cleaner.   I would never dream of trying to play the latest graphics intensive and recent memory games on it.   However, when I finally save enough money for a new gaming rig and the CPU security spaghetti patching is over, I want something that will play the latest releases at the best quality.  The last may be wishful thinking.  We live in uncertain times.
