Was the Intel problem big enough to put people off buying their processors?

After a statement saying that systems in the past 10 years or so are affected and the patch on windows will slow them down by (UP TO) 30%, Is this enough or should it discourage me for example from buying an i7 from their recently released 8th gen line?

Is it worth considering AMD and if I have a list already put together already, should I switch to Ryzen?

People forget that Intel CPU's are not the only Intel chips affected by issues. The Intel Puma 6 has been affected with issues as well, these chips are generally used in Cable Modems. Actually Arris is getting sued over the SB6190, due to its Intel Puma 6 chip. I also read the Puma 5 and 7 Chips are affected to a degree as well.

With that, I might consider thinking twice about purchasing an Intel Chip. My only issue is that the current Ryzen Line up, at least according to the website I was looking at, has about equivalent single threaded performance to my i5 3570K, so yeah, not much of an upgrade for me. Though its multi threaded performance was a shit tonne higher.

The mitigations against Meltdown have so far been shown to have minimal issues in consumer use cases. The only people who are really hurt are those who run servers.

Put me off. I was about to buy an 8700K, too. (Well, that and 16 PCI-E lanes in 2018... because people clearly only use one pcie device, right?)

Yes, I have been put off purchasing a new system.  Intel definitely has issues they need to fix instead of mitigate.  However, I am not convinced AMDs chip architecture is significantly superior for security.  I want to see more information on how Intel and AMD both can ensure the security of the Data and Resources they process without having to use spaghetti patching to protect them.

If they do not have it already, will the industry dedicate a portion of the CPU die to security?  Just like we have GPUs.  May be pre certify code being run?

Thanks for all of the replies!

I'll probably wait for Ryzen but I'll be waiting either way since I'm in no rush at the moment to build a pc.

If you are a normal PC gamer then the effect for you is very very low. You don't need to worry about it. The main problem is the servers because the problem is with the cache. If you are a normal PC gamer don't worry.

The point isnt the performance issues. The point is Intel hid this from us. They knew about this ahead of time. As I stated above, this isnt the first time Intel had a major fuck up.

Yes, of course. That's the big problem. I just wanted to inform people who think they're PC will gonna get slow. Because there are many people don't know how this will affect them.

Note: Please use more appropriate words.

AMD chips needs to be able to game at 120+hz consistently for gamers to really consider ryzen, fingers crossed on zen+.

On the workstation side, if i was to build one, 1950x is a no-brainer. Meltdown is a big mess for big businesses, not so much for consumers.

I dont believe the patch in full affect yet because if what i read is true it states 90% of the effected machines won't even get the patch until January 9th or has that changed.  So we really don't even KNOW what performance hit it will be untill the patch is fully applied i think most people believe they already have the patch but i don't think that is true at this point.

I upgraded to a better CPU a few days before the meltdown news, but I didn't really have much of a choice anyway because I already had an LGA2011-v3 socket motherboard. Upgrading the CPU is easier and cheaper.
