Can't tell the difference between 60fps and 144fps

JoostinOnline

I got a 144hz monitor for Christmas, and I'm just not seeing the difference.  I ran UFOTest and it's noticeable there, but in games (where the frame rate is 144fps) I just don't see anything special.  I can see the difference in games when playing at 50fps vs 60fps (when I had a 750 Ti I had to make sacrifices), but doubling the framerate doesn't seem to make a difference.

Was I just expecting too much?

Edit: I've already confirmed several times that it's running at 144hz, so please stop telling me to check.

You have to get inside monitor properties in Windows to set it to 144Hz, then you will have 144fps desktop. Then you need to go inside Nvidia Control Panel and set to 144Hz.

I did.  I've checked to make sure that it's running at 144hz from both Windows and in the menu itself.  I used UFO Test to verify there wasn't any frame skipping.

Yes. The human eye can't see more than 24.5 FPS anyway since it's been proven that our peak perception ends at cinematic experiences. Higher hz monitors are just gimmicks where some extra GPU teraflops may provide mildly smoother performance.

That's a good idea.  I guess I didn't notice the 50/60 difference immediately.

Apparently not to everyone though lol.  I'm pretty sure he was joking though.

Its just a joke calm down :P

To answer your question.

Its OKAY people perceive motion very differently from each other.

Some people could really tell the difference while other said they can but its just because of placebo effect.

Try that. maybe your eyes just havent adjust themselves to that glorious 144hz frame rate.

Depends on the game really. I can't tell the difference either if I play something like LoL, but it's noticeable much more easily in first person shooters.

Agree.

I joined the 144Hz elites around Christmas...coming from 60Hz.

It wasn't very noticeable for games like:

  • Starcraft II,
  • League of Legends
  • r00nscape (don't ask; somehow ended up committing to a 6-month membership with a bunch old buddies -- going back to the 1990's/2000's)

But the difference was immediate, like BOOM holy sh!t (at least for me) for:

Just an update on this.  To everyone who suggested I get a 144hz monitor in the past...

You bastards!!!!!!!!  Everything else looks terrible now that I've gotten used to it!  It's like how you saw an N64 game when you were 10 compared to now.

Part of me wishes I'd gotten a 60hz IPS display instead.  I'd still be happy with 50-60fps, and the image would be much clearer.  Oh well.

I couldn't do that kinda fps anymore, maybe for solo gaming or something. My days of low fps ended when I built a desktop and sold the laptops.

I can never go back to 60hz.  I'm so incredibly spoiled with 144hz.  When games push 100+ fps I'm seeing fluid motion I haven't seen since the crt days.

I could tell the difference right away when I first moved my mouse across the screen.

Note: that it won't be noticeable in all games.  Some games even lock your refresh rate at 60hz (Dark Souls 3 does this).

Fuck off. the eye can see passed thousands. youre just another one of those mindless drones that dont fucking do their research before they type. heres a link to an article or a few
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-highest-frame-rate-fps-that-can-be-recognized-by-human-perception-At-what-rate-do-we-essentially-stop-noticing-the-difference

Heres another one

this statement that the human eye cant see passed 24 fps nonsense is just stupid. i've got a 144hz monitor and its heavenly, when it dips bellow 70 i really start to feel it chug. i can noticeably tell the difference between 50, 60, 70,80,90,100,110,120,130 and 140 fps. people need to stop with this stupid argument. just some people have difficulty noticing because not all people are made the same way and have the same abilities. just because you cant see passed 30 fps doesnt mean someone else cant see passed 1000.
