Im an idiot. Need help deciding between MacBook pros

So hello guys,

im an idiot. We’ll just put that out there for now. I ordered a MacBook from Best Buy the other day. 512 gen, 16gb ram, i7 variant. Non touch bar. Now I’m sure that there will be people saying to return the MacBook and get something else, but, however I’m 100% sure i want a MacBook. Anyways, although the touch bar is a bit gimmicky, it’s *slightly* useful for video editing. However, as I said, I’m an idiot and ordered the wrong one. So I’m not sure now. I can return the one I have right now for full price but the only touch bar ones that are carried atm are i5 8gb ram 512gb ssd ones. So now I’m not sure. Do I keep my i7 non touch bar one w/ 16gb of ram or do I return it ( Best Buy is across my neighborhood) or do I swap it for a touch bar i5 one with 8gb of ram. I’m a student atm, so it’s not like I’m editing Hollywood movies, so it’s not too important if my video takes 5-10mjns more to render. I also do quite a bit of photoshop and Lightroom l.

Thanks guysssss

TLDR: ordered wrong MacBook. Which is better, i7 512gb ssd 16gb ram non touch bar or i5 8gb 512 gb ssd MacBook with touch bar. Which one is better for video editing Lightroom and photoshop

Well, i7 vs. i5 is irrelevant as they're both dual cores. Given just those two choices I'd opt for 16gb.

Btw are you talking about the non touch bar 2017 13" or the 2015 13"?

2015 vs. 2017 touch bar:

  • Haswell vs. Skylake
  • Iris 5100 vs. Iris Plus 640
  • 2015 SSD isn't soldered
  • 2017 has a much larger trackpad
  • 2017 has lower travel keys
  • 2017 has a better/brighter P3 disply
  • 2017 has TB3
  • 2017 has better speakers
  • 2015 has magsafe charger, USB-A, SD card, HDMI
  • 2017 has usb-c/tb3

2017 non touch bar vs. 2017 touch bar:

  • non-touch bar SSD isn't soldered (although it's very propietary whereas adapters do exist to work with the 2015 ssd)
  • Iris Plus 640 vs. Iris Plus 650
  • Touch Bar has two extra type-c/tb3 ports

They’re both 2017 versions. So I should opt for 16gb then? Is there any way that I would saturate 8gb? I have 8 in my secondary windows pc and it never runs above around 6. Also yeah I heard that the i5 and i7 are identicle, save for the i7 having a .33ghz boost

These are the differences I'd "worry" about.

2017 non touch bar vs. 2017 touch bar:

I'm personally constantly around 16gb, but I also have like 40 tabs open at most times, and I'll often use a VM/IDE, so I burn through memory. But 8gb could definitely pose a problem under heavy loads (especially looking forward).

That is true...

i was looking at the touch bar as well due to the 2 extra ports. On my 5820k workstation, with 64 gb of ddr4, I idle at 6gb usage.

The Touchbar is pretty useless.

It offers nothing and costs having a smaller battery.

Yeah it’s pretty gimmicky. It’s just that I’m coming from a touchscreen acer, and I’m used to moving stuff around by hand and whatnot. Also scrolling through timelines.

Trust, the Trackpad on the new Macs makes touchscreen seem like antiques.

Ok so I am not here to tell you not to get a Mac BUT I will say wait for 8th gen to hit the Pros because one this will put 2016-2017 left overs on sale and two the 8th gen chips with the extra cores are huge if your doing editing, plus by then better GPU might be offered

Windows allocates more RAM to itself as you go up in capacity. There’s nothing wrong with the machine, it’s just Windoze being Windoze

That's an F in the profile pic

ah I have the i7 512gb 16gb version. I personally don't do any photo editing and mostly got it for the 16gb RAM

since there's only two ports on one side it's a bit of a pain if you want to charge, so I recommend a longer USB C cable like this or Apple power extension cable
