Where can I get a legitimate copy of Windows?

Crunchy Dragon

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for somewhere I can get a legitimate copy of Windows XP or Vista to load onto an old system. Does anyone have any ideas or know any places I can find such a copy?

ebay

although due to neither system being supported by microsoft theres actually no reason to really get a legit copy but we'll just gloss over that , so technically you could just get it anywhere at all.

you could install ubuntu instead

It currently runs Ubuntu and doesn't have the necessary memory to run the current distro on it.

What's more, I can't play XP/Vista Pinball on Ubuntu

then ebay

as i stated it actually doesn't matter if you use a real disc or a copied disk. if it's the same disk it's the same disk.  due to windows xp not supporting any sort of key checking system you can use any key as well.

the os is essentially so outdated that getting a "legit" copy isn't really something that anyone cares about not even microsoft. Like trying to get a legit copy of dos 6.22

MS took down the official downloads for XP and Vista, only 7, 8.1, and 10 are available now. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/

You'd probably need a disc copy if you want a truly legit copy.

If you just want the pinball game from ME and XP, you can probably find a download of it that'll run on Windows 10.

Yeah, I missed that part. I don't think there is a way short of finding someone with a CD at this point

You can still buy genuine keys off ebay, they usually run around $10 or so. They also often come with a link to an official non-modified disc image. That's about as legit a route as you're gonna get.

I think you can download an ISO for Hyper-V (VMs). I'm pretty sure you can use them for full systems too.

EBay and Amazon are good places. I got OEM Vista key from German Amazon. As they are not sold/produced/supported by MS, there aren't any bigger retailers. And most keys will be OEM ones from laptops and such. Since Vista and XP are from era when OEMs weren't limited to first mobo, these are as legit as if you'd get full price OEM Win10.
