thanks, i overclocked both my CPU to 4.5 ghz and my GTX 1070 to 2124mhz. my GPU is maxed out most of the time, but i dont really know about my CPU. dont really pay much attention to it... but if you want more FPS in demanding games on 1440p 144hz. what should you upgrade first, GPU or CPU and what CPU or GPU do you recommend for those settings.

Well since Assassins Creed Origin is a very demanding game and in the video I posted the guy had 60% on all 8 threads on a 5Ghz OCed 7700k. So, I guess upgrading your CPU should come first. No point in upgrading your GPU if it's going to be bottle-necked by your CPU anyway...

If you can, get a 7700k, else the 6700k would be good to. The 7700k would most likely require a bios update on your motherboard.

I have an 15 6600k And an gtx 1070 atm. I game on 1440p 144hz. Is it worth it to upgrade to the new i7 8700k. I really want to. But is it worth it?

no because you would have to get a new motherboard as well

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

If you only play games on your machine then I think it's not. Keep in mind you'll need a new motherboard too...

Not unless you have deep pockets. Buy a beefy cooler if you don't already have one and overclock your i5

My i5 is at 4.5 GHz. I have Custom waterloop. So cooling is Not an issue

I would recommend adjusting settings first.  Just for gaming, the 8700K isn't really worth it.  A 6700K or 7700K would be the better upgrade, honestly.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

The single core performance should be already very close to that of an 8700k if it is overclocked that high

You could get an i7-7700k or i5-7600k and flash your motherboards bios. It would save you the money of buying an expensive new motherboard.

No, it would be harder since you already install a custom watercooling

just be happy with your current system

I wouldn't recommend moving from the 6600K to the 7600K, there's not really any improvement there.

On what settings do you play assassins creed origin? How is your CPU usage while playing the game?

Checkout this video @ 9:27:

It's a really demanding game. And even with a 7700k which has a 60% overall load and he doesn't get a stable 60fps either on high/medium settings at 1440p.

I am thinking about 6700k. Than I do Not need an other motherboard right?  Is there much difference between the 6700k And the 7700k??

some MB manufactures (most, really) have updated BIOSs availible to allow KabyLake (7700k) CPUs to function on Z170 chipsets. All that is required is to start your computer and load into the BIOS (ESC or F2, or whatever the manufactures states), find the BIOS update menu, and update. MOST of them have an update via Web feature, but it's not all that difficult to D/L the BIOS from the manufacture's support website, place it on a USB drive, and do it that way.

But to even make a determination of weather or not a CPU upgrade is required, you'd have to know what you CPU load is when gaming. If it's maxed out and your GPU isn't, then your CPU is the issue. but if they are both closely matched in usage, you need a much more expensive solution i'm afraid. Either that or you play at decreased settings.

I would wait until 10nm Ice Lake by around october of 2018... you'll need a new motherboard for those as well, it will be the Z390 chipset.

Yes. If you want to reach the upper threshold of the FPS range, then the 8700k is the best CPU there is. That said, you're likely facing a GPU bottleneck as well. So, in that case, I'd just save up and upgrade to a better GPU and CPU once Intel and Nvidia release their new lines.

Worth is a relative word though. Only you can really decide if it's worth it to you. It would be for me.

It is for those who want high refresh rates ;)

I wouldn't spend any kind of money on a 7600k when the 8600k completely destroys it...

That's not the only metric you can go off of. The 8700k will beats the 7600k by a mile.

Only if you can get it super cheap. They're honestly not worth much when they get beaten pretty significantly by a $225 i5.
