Video game graphics heading the wrong direction?

This is a personal opinion I'd like to share. For me it seems most modern games graphics are trying to be too fancy. The result is that the visual becomes too unreal. For instance, Crysis 3 which although is incredibly advanced with all the particles and stuff it looks really fake. The game looks good definitely, awesome even but they look fake. Too plasticy. Battlefield 4 visuals for me suffers the same problem. Although it looks very advanced and great something is just so off it doesn't look real at all. Unreal Engine is also a great example. Actually any game I can think of powered by Unreal Engine looks more unreal than any other game powered by frosbite or cryengine. But the engine IS called "unreal" engine so I guess it does make sense...

The game I actually HAVE seen trying to look real is the original Crysis. Personally I think in certain scenarios vanilla Crysis 1 looks more real than Crysis 3. And with all the great mods there is for it it's unbelievable how a modded 2007 game looks so much more realistic than a triple A 2013 title. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq7-hTVP9AE

The only recent game I can think of that actually tries to look real is Metal Gear Solid 5 powered by fox engine. Sadly that's exclusive to consoles so their hardware is holding it's visuals back.

What do you guys think? Do you think the direction game visuals is heading toward is fine? Or do you prefer it to head toward trying to replicate real life rather than being too fancy?

I think I prefer anime styled games anyway. Also cartoon styled games rock. I'm not a major fan of games that try to look real, though I do play some like BF for the gameplay. (crysis sucks ass though, can't keep me entertained.)

yea i thjink we are in the age of gaming where shiny and bright objects are considered more realistic. and some cases its true but alot of the times its just over saturation and rarely appealing to the eye (at least for me)

Have you played Metro: Last Light? :)

I know what you mean, I think realistic graphics only look best on sports titles and racing games. One of my fav franchises is the Zelda series and honestly, I'd much rather see more games like this and even more JRPGs vs another semi-realistic shooter.

If I wanted realistic HD graphics, I'd go outside.

I think that if they changed their color palate to match what real life is like, people wouldn't like the games because they're monotone or colors slur together. I don't like the way they're going with graphics but trying to have it match real life isn't the solution either.

Coming from console gaming on ps3 and 360, im loving the way visuals are looking. Have you played bf4 side by side ps3 and on pc on highest settings? Played the beta on both side by side seeing the ps3 version a almost threw up lol. Assassins creed 4 also looks amazing. I played the previous AC games all on my 360 and what a difference AC4 looks maxed out on my rig. The way the rain affects in game I thought water was about to leak through my TV :)

For me, the problem isn't that these games are going to far with graphics and making things look too real but they are kissing something's that we have in real life. Like on my PC, skyrim with about 100 mods that enhance the graphics of the game makes it look great but with a couple of mods that make things like grass and hair move and interact with the world around them I feel way more immersed in the game and I overall have a better experience. But after I got a better graphics card for my PC and I could run skyrim with both sets of mods it looks better then either one separately. So I think that making the graphics better by using bigger textures and more detailed worlds is great but developers should also focus on the physical properties abd interactions of everything in the worlds.

It's a simple reason Crytek explains that often in Interviews.

Reality looks boring!

As long as we don't have Ray/Path Tracing they will try to go for a more CGI Animated style, because it will give the best looking result.

And even then we will still be full of color filters and lens flares.

I think we should stop worrying about graphics and and put more time into the game worlds, one of the most annoying things to me in GTA V or any GTA for the matter is 95% of all the stores/house/buildings are "closed" off because the interiors were never made

Metro LL doesn't use Unreal engine. It uses their own engine, 4A.

Back to topic,I prefer more "unreal",fantasy-like games.A recent triple A title that looks like that is Bioshock Infinite. It looks so awesome because it doesn't look like reality, and I love it.However, the story is amazing too,and that's what matters. After you finish a game you're left with the story and some gameplay impressions.

I think games should split up in two different genres : gameplay and story.

"Gameplay" games should be just like current games : games made for you to have fun.

"Story" games would be more like interactive movies. It would be the easiest way to live in a presented world.Books are too hard to understand for some people(you only have the ideea,no visuals,no sound, etc), most movies are just too average now, and these games would give you the oportunity to choose what you want to do.

This is what I think.

I would say everything up until around 2010, after that there's really few art styles I liked from games, I think they make it too shinny and it gets to a point where it looks unreal, there are some games that I think look quite nice tho, I'm not saying I don't like them I just think they're going in the wrong direction, because they try to make all the models and animations so real, that when the art is unreal, it just doesn't fit in.

some time ago i saw the faceworks demo from nvidia, in which they were all happy about simulating so good the human face and expressions...

is it just me, or they fell right in the deepest, darkest, undisclosed zone of the uncanny valley? that can't be the future

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvaGd4KqlvQ

anyway, i think that reality simulation is cool and i like to see what an amazing job hw/sw can do nowadays, but that's not what makes a game's visual experience memorable

the ones who make you sit back and say "woah" are not the programmers throwing in more polygons and better shaders, but the level designers, putting beauty inside of games

edit: yep i don't know how to embed a video

An issue with games and in game graphics is something called: "The Uncanny Valley"

Graphics are Outstanding but developers dont want to go any higher because of it...

If they push too hard they could fall in to the "Valley" and the game would feel creepy and wont sell.

If they push to little the game feels childish and comes across more like "Southpark"of "Family guy"

Polly did an interesting article on it all a few months back: http://www.polygon.com/2013/9/4/4695108/video-games-flattening-the-uncanny-valley

a small explanation aswell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVIkLuuW7zw#t=23
