Any tips for making AM3+ tolerable?

Yes, I know AM3+ is a dead platform with the rolling out of Ryzen and intel products from the same time period being generally better.

But right now I am in no position to get a new processor.

My question is what would you do to get the most out of an older FX 6300, stock clock speeds.

I need to get an SSD, that much is clear to me. My 2TB HDD is great, but slow.

Would RAM Upgrades be worthy as well? I currently have 8GBs.

Coolers? I use the stock one right now (I know, shameful)

GPU I think is fine, GTX 970 (I don't care about many new games, so...)

What would you all recommend?

Put cpu+cooler+mb+ram on ebay,  add 100$ or so, buy ryzen 3 1200 + b350 + ddr4 memory and overclock the cpu if desired.

im still using a Phenom X6 1090t oc to 3.8ghz with a GTX 1060 6GB(my pc is in my profile)

SSD will help you a ton

ram speeds wont result in any benefits for gaming

get a good cooler and start overclocking - you should be able to hit 3.8ghz with no issues, and even more if your mobo can deliver the power properly

what motherboard are you using?

OC or sell to get an i3 8100 or pentium G4560 + mobo ddr4

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

First things first download Nvidiainspector and lock frame rates to 60FPS and then disable V-sync that should get rid of a lot of tearing while also lower CPU usage.

Some games like Farcry 4 will not stay at 60FPS at even medium settings so you could always lock it to 30FPS. FX CPU's have terrible IPC and at the very least try to get that CPU to 4.0ghz if you have a decent 990fx board. NOT 970 MSI garbage.

8 gbs is fine for any regular pc or gaming task today, just don't try having all the things open at once (especially since that would also eat up cpu power...)

Higher end Socket AM4 motherboards (like the one in my profile) support AM3+ coolers, so there is that.

Personally, I wouldn't invest too much beyond that and just start saving for Coffee Lake or Ryzen.

Is the G4560 that good?

I mean I'd be losing four cores, despite gaining a lot in speed. I just don't see how that is a worthy tradeoff.

No. no it's not. it would be a noticeable improvement in like 90% of games due to the MASSIVE increase in IPC, but honestly, there's no reason to buy ANY intel processor that isn't 8th gen right now. the 8100 is cheap enough and the difference between it and the pentium would be HUGE, and your FX CPU wouldn't even come close. it's honestly insane, bc you're essentially getting a 7th gen $220+ i5 for about $130.

and when you look at it from a price/performance standpoint, it really is no exaggeration to say that 8th gen has made the ENTIRE 6th/7th gen (not X series, even though it made a lot of that irrelevant as well) completely pointless. it also, sadly enough, kinda blows ryzen out of the water in most cases, too.

I feel so out of the loop right now.

A quad core i3??? For $117 USD?!

Wow okay, go you intel.

you can tell ryzen really did get them stirring. Thank god for ryzen. Even if you're an intel fanboy, look at how much INSANE price/performance has improved on intel just over ONE generation after ryzen. It's basically a bigger increase than the past 4-5 generations combined.

I mean, it's a way of making it tolerable..

And I can follow the advice of other forum goers and take to eBay to get rid of what I have now.

One last thing. Unless you're absolutely keen to dump that cpu ASAP, you should really hold on a few months till they come out with the cheaper mobos (save $80-100) unless you plan to OC.

I was doing that regardless, as it is right now I am planning all this out.

Probably a summer project for me, so that should give prices time to drop and such.

Who knows, maybe RAM will be slightly cheaper by then.....

But for real, I'm glad you found a good option and have time to wait, you're going to get a killer build!

Honestly, for the length of time you waited, it wouldn't be a bad idea to just splurge on an 8700K build.
