Amazon tries to compensate for lack of YouTube on Echo Show

AlTech

Amazon is dropping the price of their current Echo Show recently after Google pulled the YouTube service from Amazon's Echo product.

Google officially made a statement a few weeks ago saying that Amazon had violated the YouTube TOS.

Amazon seems to think it needs to compensate for the lack of YouTube on their product.

Quote

Amazon just put the Echo Show on sale for the first time since launching in June, dropping the price on the screen-equipped Echo from $229.99 to $199.99.

The timing of the sudden sale is particularly interesting given that, as Variety reported on Friday, sales of the Echo Show have noticeably dropped in the past few weeks after Google pulled YouTube support from Amazon’s smart speaker. A price cut could help boost sales on the Echo Show, despite the uncertainty around whether Amazon and Google will be able to reconcile difficulties when it comes to YouTube support

Thanks Amazon! the Echo Show now isn't a ripoff. It's expensive but not outrageously so. Not that i was going to buy it anyway ofc :P.

Isn't it still just a 13% drop in price?

$230 vs $200.

Both are above what i'd pay for it but some people clearly like spending money on it.

The 13% discound brings the price down to $199.23 if you rounded the price to $230 with 13% off, then it would be $200

Thats how I got the percent :P the reason I mentioned it was that it still seemed like a rip off.

has anyone gotten through as to which TOS statement got violated the previous few weeks ago? surely it can't be just amazon getting the echo to open a youtube video via another app, because the only way I can think of to solve that is to have google code their own app for the echo ._.

It appears that Google doesn't like the UI of Amazon Echo's YouTube client.

"The most important thing to know about the new $229.99 Echo Show, an Alexa speaker with a screen, is what it doesn't do. You basically never need to tap the screen for anything, unless you really want to. There is not an "app store" where you hunt around for new things to add to your screen. It sits on your counter, answers your questions, sets your timers, and occasionally displays useful information. That's it, and that's great."

If your a lazy person who cant be bothered leaning over to touch the screen to open an app, than the echo show is just right for you.

As if your phone and laptop's microphones aren't always on as well. You can send your thank-you letter to America's NSA.

Tin foil hat firmly on I see... my laptop has hardware mute buttons and runs linux, I'm fairly sure the NSA can't get to that. In theory the phone's mic is not always on, and android should ask you when it's going to turn it on; we can't be 100% sure that it isn't, but I'd rate the chances of that to be fairly low considering I have a phone from oneplus (which isn't based in the US) and the us government doesn't have any specific interest in spying me.

The US govt spies on everybody. Like.. really everybody. Even if you don't live in the US and have never been there.

If your device is connected to the internet, the NSA surely has access to it. The NSA is corrupt and loves abusing its power, the original Snowden leaks and new leaks really show what they want. Windows, Linux, OSX, iOS, Android; it doesn't matter your device, they want in and they want in yesterday.

I don't have a tinfoil hat on. I'm just realistic. If I had a tinfoil hat on, I'd be covering my cameras, disconnecting microphones, and using VPNs on VPNs to disguise my internet traffic... I don't do any of those. The NSA probably isn't watching or listening to me, but they could be in a second if they felt like it.

Wow the negativity in this thread about this being only for lazy people is just bullshit.

Look, people have use for this such as in the kitchen when you can use your hands all the time. It has its uses just like the echo and home.

Why don't the person with dirty hands just stop what they're doing, wash and dry their hands and then go to use a tablet or phone or device?

Seems like Amazon created a problem for themselves here to satisfy a marketing slideshow.

Or how about I just ask it a question and get the answer in 5 secs rather than wasting time washing just get them dirty again? This isnt laziness, just being efficient. If someone is cooking and cant remember if its 2 or 3 eggs its fucking stupid to wash up for 10 secs of typing.

Always funny to see the paranoia some ppl have about being "spied by the NSA".. like.. who the hell you are that you think you are remotely important for and intelligence agency to look up your stuff. Like for real.. it's just dumb. They don't care about you, they don't care on which of your parents basement you're living, nor what porn movie you were watching lol.

No tin foil hat (seriously, those are just ugly), but I did physically unplug the webcam in my laptop and taped off my front facing camera on my phone.  I've always been leery about cameras, not so much because I think someone is (or might be) spying on me, but simply because someone could spy on me with them.  Just that knowledge alone makes me slightly paranoid about them (but is it truly paranoia if they're actually out to get me...... ;) ).

Exactly, why pay to just get even more spied on by a shitty voice assistant that's not even especially useful. Friends family has one, it mistakes his name for its and starts listening so randomly at dinner or whatever you suddenly get it spitting back random search results or saying it didn't understand. It's retarded and not something I'd want to pay for

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
