Logitech’s Sticker Keycaps

Coonrad:

Hope this note find you well. Thanks for taking the time to look at the G613 Wireless Keyboard.

We wanted to address the comments about keycap quality with Romer G switches.

The switches we use are textured ABS plastic that are then printed and treated with a UV coating. This is a standard process. They are not stickers.

While it is true that dual shot is more durable, it is actually cheaper if you are only doing one layout. We make keyboards for the entire world in many different layouts, which means its not practical and sometimes not feasible to use dual shot due to the size and position of the typeface of certain characters.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

Linus:

Sorry, stickers was probably an unfair word to describe the process.

But it doesn't change our feelings about the durability of the keycaps in use versus the cost of the keyboard.

If you have to do a cheapo French-Canadian layout or whatever that uses printed lettering, then so be it, but for the core SKUs I feel pretty strongly that they should be doubleshot at $150 USD :(

Either way we'll discuss it on the WAN Show this week.

Google announces the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

Source 1: posted by DocSwag https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/842631-google-announces-the-pixel-2-and-pixel-2-xl/

Source 2: https://www.anandtech.com/show/11899/hands-on-with-googles-pixel-2-xl

  • See spec chart on forum

  • The Pixel 2 is made by HTC, Pixel 2 XL is made by LG

  • Both now have dual front facing stereo speakers

  • Now with EIS and OIS

  • Funny colour names:

    • Kindaf blue

    • Just black

    • Clearly white

    • People call the black and white one “dipped chocolate” or “panda”

  • Google search bar moved to bottom of home screen

  • No headphone jack

  • Fingerprint sensor on the back

Intel renames their Kaby Lake Pentiums

Source 1: posted by NumLock21 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/842420-intel-renames-their-kaby-lake-pentiums/

Source 2:  https://www.techpowerup.com/237577/intel-to-rebrand-pentium-kaby-lake-processors-as-pentium-gold

  • Intel is re-branding their 7th generation Pentium "Kaby Lake" desktop processors under the new Pentium Gold brand, similar to the precious-metal nomenclature from its Xeon product-line.

  • This affects retail SKUs of the Pentium G4560, G4620, and G4600.

  • The change should help consumers tell the mainstream-desktop Pentium processors from the ultra low-power chips branded Pentium.

    • MSDT Pentium dual-core chips will be branded Pentium Gold,

    • low-power "Gemini Lake" SoCs will be Pentium Silver brand

    • Celeron will not be re-branded.

  • The Pentium Gold SKUs will be identical to the parts they are replacing.

    • You probably won't even need to update your motherboard BIOS (of your 100-series and 200-series chipset motherboards)

  • The name change also comes with a refreshed case-badge and a slightly modified box design.

  • The change comes into effect from the 2nd of November, 2017

  • Different tech publications are getting different benchmark scores (Cinebench) for Coffee Lake.

  • Is it because of VRM throttling?

Intel Will No Longer Provide Per-Core Turbo Frequencies

Source 1: posted by https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/843248-avoiding-a-statement-on-multicore-turbo-boosts-for-all-future-chips-including-cfl/

Source 2:  https://www.extremetech.com/computing/257044-intel-will-no-longer-provide-per-core-turbo-frequencies-making-motherboard-tuning-impossible

  • Intel has declared that it will no longer officially disclose its per-core Turbo frequencies.

  • Commenting in a statement:

We’re no longer disclosing this level of detail as its proprietary to Intel. Intel only specifies processor frequencies for base and single-core Turbo in our processor marketing and technical collateral, such as ARK, and not the multi-core Turbo frequencies. We’re aligning communications to be consistent. All Turbo frequencies are opportunistic given their dependency on system configuration and workloads.

8 Core Ryzen 5 CPUs appear in Korea (?!)

Source 1: posted by Mr_Troll https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/841953-apparently-amd-is-starting-to-sell-8-core-r5-cpus-in-korea/

Source 2: http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-5-1600x-cpus-8-working-cores-spotted-wild/

  • Several new owners of Ryzen 5 1600 and 1600X CPU have booted their new systems up only to discover that they have 8 cores and 16 threads instead of the expected 6 cores and 12 threads.

  • After benchmarking, the chips performed exactly like 1800 series chips.

  • All of the unlocked chips were manufactured on the 36th week of 2017 in Malaysia

  • The CPUs have the expected base and Turbo clocks

  • Each CPU is tested right before it’s packaged to be shipped, so it’s implausible for the manufacturing facility not to have known that those 1600s and 1600Xs they were shipping weren’t 1800Xs.

  • It’s possible that this was a decision made simply as the result of higher demand on Ryzen 5 1600X and 1600 CPUs leading AMD to use some of its less purchased 8-core dies as Ryzen 5 1600Xs and 1600s to meet the demand.

Oh snap- RX Vega 64 Outperforms GTX 1080 Ti By Up To 23%

Source 1: posted by Gdourado https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/841217-amd-rx-vega-64-outperforms-nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-by-up-to-23-in-dx12-forza-7/

Source 2: http://wccftech.com/amd-rx-vega-64-outperforms-nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-23-dx12-forza-7/

  • Early benchmarks of racing game Forza 7 on DX12 show AMD’s RX Vega 64 outpacing NVIDIA’s GTX 1080 Ti by up to 23%

  • The drivers used were Crimson ReLive 17.93 for AMD and 385.69 for NVIDIA. These drivers are officially optimized for Forza 7.

  • All graphics options were set to their maximum settings and 8 x MSAA was used in all three resolutions tested.

  • Vega lead the pack in 1080P and 2560x1440 gaming, but fell behind the 1080Ti in 4K

  • It appears there’s some magical driver wizardry that AMD has done to avoid bottlenecks and take advantage of the multi-threaded nature of DX12 that NVIDIA has yet to replicate for Forza 7.

Samsung to make Billions making iPhone parts

Source 1: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/10/02/samsung-4-billion-making-iphone-x-parts/

  • Samsung could earn around $4 billion more in revenue making parts for the iPhone X than from the parts it makes for its own Galaxy S8 handset

    • If Apple sells 130 million iPhone X units in the first 20 months of production, and Samsung earns $110 on each unit, they’ll earn $14.3 Billion

    • Galaxy S8's global sales are expected to be 50 million, earning Samsung $202 each, for a total of  $10.1 Billion.

  • Samsung supplies the OLED screens and NAND flash memory chips for the iPhone X

  • Samsung employees apparently often refer to Apple with the code name "LO," short for "Lovely Opponent”

  • Apple and Samsung are expected to be the world's two most profitable companies in 2017, excluding Chinese banks

  • Apple has encouraged OLED production by rival suppliers like Sharp and Japan Display, while also pursuing alternative sources of NAND flash, partnering with Bain Capital and others to acquire Toshiba's chip plant in a $17.7 billion deal.

  • Some iPhone 8 owners are reporting a poor experience wirelessly charging their new device, saying that even the slightest bump of the device on the charge pad can interrupt charging- including vibration notifications.

  • There are also reports of the chargepads becoming so hot during charging that they disable themselves, and only resume charging once they’ve cooled down.

  • AIM started out as the built-in chat application in America Online's desktop client, but exploded in popularity once it was broken-out as a separate application in 1997.

  • AIM’s death is no surprise:

    • AOL laid off most of the division in 2012

    • AIM started cutting off third-party access earlier this year

  • AOL’s parent company isn't saying what will be replacing AIM, but Yahoo Messenger seems like the best possibility

HOLY SH1T! Microsoft Edge coming to Android and IOS

  • Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android brings familiar features like:

    • Favorites,

    • Reading List,

    • New Tab Page

    • Reading View

  • But what makes Microsoft Edge really stand out is the ability to continue on your PC, which enables you to immediately open the page you’re looking at right on your PC.

  • Edge on iOS simply uses Apple's Webkit engine like any other web browser, so, besides helping make your iPhone an extension of your PC, and looking different you won't get anything special over any other web browser in the Apple App Store.

  • When is it out?

    • Preview available on iOS now via Apple TestFlight

    • Android users can sign up to be one of the first to test the preview app which will be available soon

  • Initially Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android will launch only in US-English

  • They’re also releasing a new Microsoft Launcher for Android, complete with News Feed (swipe right from home screen)

Mattel withdraws kid-focused “smart hub” from market after complaints

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/10/mattel-withdraws-kid-focused-smart-hub-from-market-after-complaints/

  • Mattel has scrapped a "smart home" device designed with kids in mind after awful reviews and privacy concerns

  • The device is meant to be kept in a child's room where its WiFi-enabled camera acts primarily as a voice-controlled baby monitor. It can:

    • adjust lighting levels, noting when babies wake up and then playing a lullaby or turning on a night light.

    • extensively interact with a young child, answering questions, playing games, doing singalongs, and teaching the ABCs.

  • Mattel pulled the device from shelves after:

    • Two members of Congress sent a letter to Mattel about the device saying:

      • "Never before has a device had the capability to so intimately look into the life of a child,

      • "Consumers should know how this product will work and what measures Mattel will take to protect families' privacy and secure their data."

    • The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) sent Mattel a petition with 20,000 signatures expressing concern that not only could too much data be collected about kids, but that "essential caregiving functions," like soothing a crying baby, would be effectively outsourced to robots.

  • Mattel said in a statement that the kid-focused hub did not "fully align with Mattel's new technology strategy."

Man arrested for parodying police spokesman on Twitter

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/10/miami-beach-cops-arrest-man-for-twitter-parody-of-police-spokesman/

Source 2:

  • A Miami Beach man is being charged with  impersonating a law enforcement officer after he created a parody Twitter account purporting to be Ernesto Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department.

  • The account page had a marked Miami Beach police vehicle and a photo of the officer in uniform

  • The police statement says that the guy was "engaging with local media, elected officials, and the community" as if he were the officer.

  • Something similar happened back in 2014, when police in Illinois, arrested a man for impersonating the town's mayor on Twitter. The man sued and the town had to pay $125,000 to settle the case.

    • Previously called Krypton.

  • Rumoured specs:

    • 1080p display

    • Mid Range Snapdragon processor (625)

    • 4000mAh battery

    • 4GB of RAM

    • Carbon fibre back

  • The device has already made its way through the FCC.

Aren't they already only mere dual cores with HT?  What would the cut down versions be then, single cores with no HT perhaps? xD

  • Different tech publications are getting different benchmark scores (Cinebench) for Coffee Lake.

  • Is it because of VRM throttling?

It is because LTT and some other reviewers have been fooled by default OC BIOS (~10% more performance with all core turbo and +1Ghz L3 cache) for reviewers. Only by overclocking a 8700K can reach >1500 in Cinebench. LTT should make that covert overclocking transparent (for example with YT annotations in your 8700K review and/or a new video) and not let Asus/Intel get away with covert OC reviews. Otherwise you let Asus/Intel harm your credibility and encourage even more cheating in the future. Also check clock speeds and BIOS settings next time to detect this kind of cheating in the future.
