@Intelfreak Thanks! I'm definitely going to give it a go at OCing the 1080ti. It's a Hybrid-ized founders card, so should be able to do something. Also, 1.5V for 4.7 GHz?!?

Current project is getting the 950 Pro installed, then Windows 10 installed, then OC tweaking stuff.

I keep trying to come up with reasons to move away from X58 and keep failing. Sure, PCIe2 isn't great, but having all the PCIe lanes means we can just add in USB/Sata/NVMe stuff and keep the platform relevant-ish even longer.

Definitely glad I splurged for the system back in 2010. There isn't much left from the original build at this point, but man....what a long-lived platform that's still relevant enough.

1.5 volts at 4.7 GHz is benchmark only. For every day use ít runs 4.42 GHz at 1.42 volts. BLCK overclock.

Samsung 950 PRO is deffently worfh to get. I have one running in my system. Just note that if you benchmark the speed of it, you will not get max speed, cause with a m.2 to PCIe adaptor running X4, you will be speed limit to around 1700 MB/s while Samsung 950 PRO is rated to above 2000 MB/s. But 1700 MB/s is also still way better than you can get out of sata 2 or 3.

This is my Samsung 950 PRO 256 GB in my system.

ihXPnFt.jpg

My system boots to Windows 10 PRO installed on the M.2 SSD.

I can also only say, that X58 has last a dam long time and longer than i ever expected of it. Bedst PC and buy back then i ever dit. Yeah it dit cost a fortune back then, but look how long it has been relevant so far. For me as well the only things left from my original build is the case and PSU. Every thing else has been replaced or upgrade. Also my old X58 mobo. But not because it die. I just found a great bundle last year i cut not say no to. Original i had a I7 920 planted in a Asus Rampage 2 Extreme mobo, but i found this bundle i have now contained a I7 980X, Asus P6X58D Premium mobo, 12 GB of corsair triple channel ram and Noctua NH-D14 cpu cooler including shipping for 224 USD and sold the old setup for 140 USD. So a rather cheap upgrade and i got a second gen X58 mobo means it has Sata 3 and USB 3.0 onboard.

I suppose I shouldn't tell you that an NZXT S340 only needs minor mods to fit one. Or that most EATX compatible cases will also work :P

Though I would highly recommend getting a proper big case, I modded a Lian-Li PC-08 and it worked but it was not easy to get everything to fit.

I did not need to know this but I needed to know this.

I currently have the HAF 932 from Coolermaster. I've got a wild idea of going full water cooled on this mythical SR-2 build....but at the same time, I don't want a massive case to fit all that stuff.

What coolers are you using on your build?

Nice! And yea, the 950 arrived yesterday so I'm hoping to install it tonight after work. Need to source windows while I'm at it. I've been running the 215x21 setup constantly. It'll do higher but it's past the point of diminishing returns.

The HAF series are pretty cool though I don't think the SR2 would fit.

IF you do want to do a custom loop I have fittings, a pump and maybe a few other things. I was planning on doing a custom loop so I got a bunch of parts but I ran out of space in my case.

I am using two of the Corsair H100i v2. All of my parts except my wireless adapter are in my sig down below.

Do you have the chipset cooler waterblock? I know they existed once upon a time. Otherwise I'd be going for dual AIOs.

Also, link/photos for the mods you needed to get it to fit?

This is very much not what I need to learn about right now, but ooooo shiny.

I do have waterblocks, in fact I have custom milled chipset waterblocks ;)

Also mods for which case? The S340 or the PC-08?

I'd have to double check, but I think I can fit this in a standard fullsize ATX case....

Most ATX cases are not tall enough and also are barely wide enough. As a reference, the SR-2 is 13.5 inches tall and 15 wide.

Though that isn't to say that there are not cases that it will fit in, there are, but not a ton.

Feel free! it isn't like there is a big demand for custom made SR2 waterblocks. They will still be here if you end up wanting them.

They would probably be similar but generally I would trust the reliability of xeons over i7s

These pictures are older but I will be getting some new ones soon. For the pc-08 I had to cut a 15 inch slot in the bottom of the case and it looks like it has a bunch of sharp teeth, those have since been smoothed away. For the S340 I had to remove the PSU shroud and give up being able to mount the psu correctly.

Yeah it is probably due to the price difference, you can get x58 chips for like $5-30

They look to be basically identical chips.

Most Xeons at the time were basically i7/i5 CPUs without an iGPU. Binning is dependent completely on silicon lottery. The Xeon also supports up to 768GB of memory vs 64GB, as well as ECC.

That is really neat! I wish it was more popular to make dual socket boards in standard sizes. For some reason earlier it didn't register that you already had a dual socket board. I thought you were saying you were interested in getting an Sr2 and then being in the dual socket club

Athlon MP = Athlon XP with multi-CPU capabilities :D

I would like an SR-2 though. I might get a 750D or something to hold it, and then use it as my main rig. Be kind of funny to go from AM4 to LGA 1366....

Are the drive bays removable in that? That would be a nice case for it but those bays will get in your way.

I forget, been a while since I checked out the 750D.

It would be kind of interesting to do, I'm not losing much performance with dual X5650s over a single Ryzen 1600. I also get twice the threads :D

According to @WhisperingKnickers his Xeons will beat my R7 2700X in multicore, so if you have a multitasking heavy workload that doesn't need individually fast cores, that would be pretty dank.

I forget, been a while since I checked out the 750D.

It would be kind of interesting to do, I'm not losing much performance with dual X5650s over a single Ryzen 1600. I also get twice the threads :D

Oh, if you have an R5 1600, an X5675 can match that if you OC to 4.5GHz, so if you get two well binned ones in an SR-2 you can demolish the R5.

According to @WhisperingKnickers his Xeons will beat my R7 2700X in multicore, so if you have a multitasking heavy workload that doesn't need individually fast cores, that would be pretty dank.

True. I've got a 1600 though, and I'm just below dual hexacore Xeons in Cinebench at 3.8Ghz.

They do great at multicore, my 5690s at 4ghz got about 1865 in cinebench iirc and that is a baby overclock, once I get my defective aio replaced I could bring them up to probably 4.4 or 4.5 and then I would be pushing 2000 cinebench
