So this was a much closer fit than I'd have liked but it fits! got the W3690 up at 4.4GHz now running 200x22 solid, pretty happy with it all things considered, not that this will last long mind you since I'm likely to be moving away to a 1920X shortly but this is much better than the stock clocks thinkstation S20 I was running prior, just to sweeten the lot, I'm almost top score in firestrike for this cpu/gpu combo too, guy above me is 14659, I'm at 14646 so with a bit of tweaking I'll be there in no time!

Welp, the 1660ti was giving me sub par performance in games, so I did a thing, store I got the 1660ti from allowed me to take the thing back in store credit so for no investment at all (still have like a tenner of credit left) I was able to grab a vega 56, unfortunately hynix memory so no flashing here but it seems to clock pretty good so I'll take it, handling my games much better at 1440p compared to the 1660

I'll keep the vega 56 in mind if I need to do an upgrade for for my video card. I don't often play newer games so I just use my GTX980

I get my dual X5675s for my dual xeon build today, but I'm wondering if I should just return them to get two x5650s and save a couple bucks as a stopgap before buying two x5690s. I don't think the drop of single threaded performance is going to be that that big of a deal. lmk what you guys think.

Actually, as of last night I was able to determine that the bent pins in the socket mean that dimm slots 3 & 4 are non functional

You have far more luck with bent pins than I ever have.

Usually enough of them are bent badly enough that the board is pretty much dead from the get go.

sadly looks at Rampage II Extreme

Sounds like you need a hot air gun, It would be worth it to replace the whole socket on a board like that

Tempting, but I don't quite know if it would be worth nearly enough to me.

The most valuable board I have on hand(that isn't in use) is in perfect physical condition anyway, I'd imagine something shorted somewhere somehow and killed it.

I took a pick to the pins on my SR-2. When I first got it, some of the memory channels wouldn't recognize and socket to socket communication failed such that it wouldn't post. I can disable individual sockets which helped me figure out what was going on, and it turned out it was a combination of bent pins and dried thermal paste in one socket (board arrived with CPUs installed).

Some careful pick work later, everything works fine. I am very hesitant to replace the CPUs though as I am not certain it'll work (or, go through more bending cycles).

But, go slow, use a magnifying glass if you can, with tons of lighting. I didn't use a heat gun.
