not about the cpu oc settings, but for 1366, don't you want 3 channels of memory?

CPUs did come, but I'm waiting till I get moar cleaning supplies so I can freshen up this Mac while I've got it pulled apart, so those probs won't go in for a bit. It already pulls 418W from the wall under middling load (counting the tower and monitor together), will be uh.... interesting to see how it does with dual quad cores that each add 40W (120W each vs 80W) IIRC.

Some updates to my dualsocket X58 builds.

The intel board came in last week and I cannot explain how tightly packed this board is. Crazy number of surface mount components on this. I was able to try booting it up with one CPU installed and it posted up just fine. Memory I bought for the build also seemed to work with no issues. I asked some questions about cooling earlier and found that with some 10mm M3 screws I was able to do a bit of a "no-no" and screw through the back of the mounting plate to create some DIY standoffs. So here's one Hyper 212 Black on the board with no issues.

IMG_1170.thumb.JPG.d538baa94294a4f14eb37503cf31934a.JPG

There's a big reason no one recommended this (I don't recommend this either) as I broke off a screw inside the mounting bracket and stripped the threads inside too

.IMG_1178.thumb.JPG.2068943ec71a9f8e2f236ca9f1ed282a.JPG

A fix I have worked up is drilling into it, epoxying something inside it and backing it out with wd40 helping or something, then retapping the threads in the backplate so I can try again. This was the only one I had a problem with though. Now all I have to do is find a case that supports SSI-EEB. I see some options on amazon for not too expensive. ~100 bucks or so.

Just found this at the same electronics recycler I bought my P6T7 WS Supercomputer at. Got it at a good deal (with warranty even.) Seems like I spend most of my paycheck there. Can't wait to get back home and finally fire my S5520SC with two processors up too. Super excited. I did do another "no-no" by trying to use two power supplies with one "jumped" to boot up the board and it freaked out hard. I tested it after with one and nothing bad happened so hopefully I didn't kill anything. Fingers crossed but I'm not worried that I killed anything.

Yeah I'm sure the screws for the 212 BE are made of cheese, I snapped one of the M4 screw posts in an X79 board lul

Maaaaaaaan that board is super nostalgic for me, good bit of kit, i miss mine

Actually it was the bolts I got a the hardware store that snapped, thankfully. And jesus that 1600 watt psu is crazy. I'm trying to think what my electric bill is going to be, using x58 it was much more expensive than what I am used to 😬.  Also looks like you're remodeling in the background, hope you're having fun!

Going to a different electronics recycler tomorrow to see if I can find a case to fit this massive motherboard. The beauty of living in one of the biggest tech cities has to be the nice used computer market. Seems like a lot of x58 is making its way to recyclers now. The more for us I guess.

sounds about right, and fortunately im not pulling anywhere near 1600w with any kind of frequency, not remodelling though, just don't have the time or energy to actually get the place painted, been this way for a few years now lul

I work in a large chain "hardware store"/ warehouse so I thought to ask ;) . I get a hell of a lot of satisfaction doing handywork like that myself. Congrats on looking for a house!

To stay on topic though I did get 2, 3TB SAS drives for 20 bucks a pop a while ago, running in raid 0 on my WS board. Absolutely insane how cheap SAS storage is, and how fast it is to read and write to it. I did a windirstat of the entire pool and it only took no time at all for ~300 gigs. Nothing mission critical on it though, and I am raid 0-ing two almost 10 year old hard drives.

I work in a large chain "hardware store"/ warehouse so I thought to ask ;) . I get a hell of a lot of satisfaction doing handywork like that myself. Congrats on looking for a house!

Ahh yeah, normally I'd love to do that stuff myself, but we had like, 6 hours between getting the keys and getting moved so i didn't have time to do it before we moved and I just couldn't be arsed moving everything to do it after, it's fine I guess though :P

oh whew, that's pretty damn good actually price wise, once i rehome my threadripper kit and upgrade I'll be going sas I reckon for the same reason

current rig: Xeon W-3175X at 4.7GHz all core 1.25v and 3200MHz cache, EVGA SR3 Dark, 48gb of tridentZ 4133 Cl19 (A0 PCB) running 4000MHz 16 16 16 34 1T, 6900XT aorus master with an EK waterblock, 1440mm custom loop, corsair HX1500i, 2x256gb 7600P raid 0(boot), 6.4tb samsung PMPM1725 for games and general storage, Lian Li V3000 plus (not super duper happy with this in all honesty), main monitor is a 27" koorui 1440p 240hz thing, and then 3 secondary 1920x1200 60hz panels one left one right and one above

I recommend the 8TB helium drives on amazon that are around 100 dollars though. Using a HBA you could configure the pool on bare metal or in the operating system. I think the deals on SAS drives are going to dry up soon, as more and more companies move to PCI storage the number of old server SAS drives will dwindle as time goes by.
