WAIT FOR VOLTA?

Go to solution Solved by Potato*Salad,

Wait for Milky Way with HBM 4 memory and 48GB Vram.

Im thinking of building a pc this holiday season and i can afford a gtx 1070 but im thinking if its wiser to wait until volta releases early 2018. Also cryptocurrency is affecting 1070 prices so i thought i'd wait and pre order the gtx 2070 which would theoritically cause less than the current gtx 1070 prices in my country at least..

Thoughts below,

Thanks!.

No matter how long you wait there will always be a card just about to come out. In my opinion, get the best you can afford now and you'll be happy.

Unless a new generation of cards just came out.

But if you wait for Volta, then you'll be so close to Navi you might want to wait for that...

I got a RX 470. So I figure when Volta comes out I'll get that and it'll give me a reason to get a better monitor.

I think it'd be best to wait for Whirlpool HBM 6 and might support 2TB of vram. It'll be using a 0.5nm process as well.

Wait if you can.

Doesn't matter if a new generation comes out. A new card will always be in the "near" future. You could buy the 1070 Ti now and then in 6 months or so the volta XX70 might come out and be ~10-20% faster. There will always be newer cards. If someone needs a computer to play now then buy what you can afford. Depending on what you are trying to play at (1080p 60Fps for example) a 1070 *(Ti) or a 1080 would suite your needs great for a while. As someone stated above, we have no info on Volta really so you could be waiting awhile.

*if a Ti comes out.

Ok, but what do you guys think about the cryptocurrency mining part? The gtx 1070 is probably more expensive currently than the msrp for the gtx 2070 possibly.

You are saying this like the 2070 wont be as expensive or more so because its newer. What makes you think miners won't want that card?

I said it a few dozen times already, and it bears repeating again:

don't wit for hardware - unless it's coming within a month, then maybe. By the time Volta comes out, yu'l be thinking "but what if I wait for AMD's [next GPU core]" and then you'll be thinking "why not wait for Ryzen update?" and so on. You can upgrade cards at any time, if you wish.

Didn't Jensen say they aren't planning a Volta gaming card? Could've sworn I read that somewhere, but that was back when I was concentrating on Vega ...

I'd personally suggest to just wait until the mining craze is over and try to snag a used card then.. should be decent price to perfornance. If you don't feel comfortable buying used, just go for it. AMD didn't really put Nvidia into a situation where they have to act fast so I guess it will take quite some time until we will be able to buy consumer Volta.

What i'm saying is, that i dont want to be spending the same price for a gtx 1070 when theres a 2070 around the corner with up to 20% better performance. And about the "what makes you think miners won't want that card?" Issue, i'll just camp at the store during the release and snag mine, so if i'm lucky and early i'll be able to get it before stocks deplete and the price skyrockets.

Wait a month for the 1070ti, it will lower the 1070 price and will probably take the current 1070 price.

Consumer Volta is not "around the corner".

Nvidia would only be competing with themselves if Volta gaming GPUs were announced.
