New Headphones coming in today, what music should i listen to,to test it out?

The headphones i bought are the Audio-Technica ATH-AD500x if that helps.

I plan to make a youtube playlist with all the suggestions and jam out for a while, since this is my first pair of REAL headphones.

IMO best way to test new headphones is to listen to songs you know and compare how they used to sound and how they sound now (best if you can get them in high quality).

R.U.T.S. or Say Less from Andy Mineo's latest album:

They sound decent on my cheap earbuds, but they can shake my windows (If I had a woofer they'd shake my whole car), so the bass is there. And Andy Mineo is an insanely good rapper anyways.

And him just being goofy (also a good track):

Listen to the music you like.

Or listen to some Greg lake era King crimson (in the court of the crimson King, in the wake of posiden), elp, and Peter Gabriel era Genesis (selling England by the pound, the lamb lies down on Broadway)

Well....i was going to test them....but the UPS driver had to pull some stupid shit...

I was home the entire time, yet it says "Customer was not available when UPS attempted delivery. Will deliver to a nearby UPS Access Point™ for customer pick up."

I didn't find that out until 6:45pm....the access point closes at 7pm...i currently don't have a car because of Harvey... so i had no way to get there in time.

The worst part is that they don't open till 8:30am, and i have to be at work at 7am,so i can't even get my package till after work, because some UPS driver was lazy....

Ha! Typical.

The worst thing about these postal services is that their warehouses are often located in the middle of nowhere (if you live in a big city). So if you don't have a car, you could be busing for 2 hours just to get your package.

I have the ATH-AD700X and one thing I can tell you, don't expect a whole lot of bass from the AD500X (performs similarly to my AD700X). So that rules out bass heavy songs (like EDM and such), but the cans are great for great soundstage, imaging and airiness, which is why it's great for games. Good for chilling with pop songs, or some chamber music and orchestral pieces as well.

As for what songs, just listen to the music you like and/or are familiar with, perhaps you can appreciate the greater level of detail the headphones bring to the table.

Well-mastered albums come to mind, you could try some of these albums:

  • Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
  • Daft Punk - RAM
  • Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms / Communique
  • Toto - Toto IV
  • Steely Dan - Aja
  • Pink Floyd - The Endless River / The Final Cut
  • Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
  • Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
  • Eric Clapton - Unplugged
  • AC/DC - Back In Black
  • Michael Jackson - Thriller

With that said, the best music is music you like, as you can appreciate the difference more with familiar songs.
