I think the idea is its a fallback, youtube is going to shit right now so they are trying to create a new youtube for if/when the current youtube dies

No, not exactly it is more so they don't trust youtube to keep giving them money in the future (though they make more money of amazon and other sponsors)

Youtube's been "going to shit" for a long time apparently (with every change - since 2006?), and everyone has predicted its imminent downfall...

in short, luke is sinking his time into floatplane.

 

in long, luke has -with linus' argeement- started an LMG spinoff company "floatplane" aiming to deliver a content creator-controlled content delivery/content consumption platform, which means that his time goes into backend stuff more than it goes into being on camera on LTT videos. they're both still under the same roof, but they kinda have an invisible wall between them as their goals are vastly different. they're essentially still working together, but they're working together on different aspects of the big end goal.

"not putting all your eggs in one basket" is the point. if floatplane would make half the money they would on youtube, but in turn halves youtube reveue, that'd be a success, because losing youtube as a platform would only be half the hit it would be otherwise. its not about the amount of money they make, its about the amount of money they can be sure of to come in next month, and the months after that.

never a bad idea to help others divide their eggs among multiple baskets :P

 

and i guess there's also a (relatively small?) profit to be made from providing the platform / software solution?

(is the end goal that people host their own floatplane or that its gonna be one big infrastructure?)

After watching the videos about where LMG gets its fat cash and the floatplane stuff. Isn't it just about enabling LMG to continue getting advertising revenue from corsair while building a better environment for the viewer?

Currently it looks like content you are going to do determinates if its worth it or not. Since latest batch on corporate overloardism Google has stricken rules on what can receive money. On top of the fact that advertisers have become very strict on how they want to be associated. You can still do it as small fry. But it may also require some inline-ads burnt into videos.

And I'd love to do ads mid video but you need the numbers to get companies in. And you need videos to get numbers.

AFAIK there isn't any definite list. Look at some of the recent news about content being de-monetized to get idea.
