Please don't buy a Blue Yeti Microphone

minervx

This mic adds bass to your voice, which makes it decent for podcasting.  It won't record music vocals or instruments very well.  Of course, this is due to USB mics being inherently inferior to XLR mics, but this product has poor design choices in its own right.

  • It scratches very easily
  • The paint chips off
  • It looks like a giant d***
  • It's ridiculously heavy
  • It takes fat outdated USB-2 cables
  • The hinge loosens no matter how much you tighten them
  • It bent two of my USB cables
  • The headphone jack is not stable
  • It takes superhuman strength to change the sound setting
  • Not enough rubber padding under it to dampen sound

Last but not least.  It picks up so much damn background noise.  It can pick up car doors opening from the other side of the street from my window.

This is probably a better way for you to spend your $100.

I am no audio specialist, but how is USB 2.0 outdated? It can theoretically deliver up to 60 MB/s speed

Most of the point you mentioned there are just simply nitpicking and makes no sense whatsoever

You left out the fact that most condensor or ribbon microphones require a properly sound treated room to best benefit from their dynamic range EQ...

But the problem is that when the cables bend because of the terrible hinge, you need to buy a cable that most people got rid of 2012.

There's a reason why it's 100$ while the most similiar equivalent Sennheiser is 3 or more times more expensive.

Got a blackout version which looks amazing IMO.

Attached to a stand which is really easy to move, seems like you haven't set it up correctly if you feel the need to replace it constantly.

Correction the mic is not heavy at all, the stand is since you want a good robust stand that you just don't knock down.

This is true but you can tweak it however you like with the right software.

Agreed.

Nobody buys a Blue Yeti to record instruments. You buy it for streaming and podcasts.

Most of those complaints are really nitpicking and can be easily sorted.

If you want to record instruments, invest in electric or electro acoustic and record through their outputs. If you want to record vocals you buy a professional microphone.

Honestly, the Snowball sounds great for a Youtube reviewer with <5000 subs or something like that.  It lacks moving parts.  It's more affordable.

-SNIP-

Here's Why you Should buy this:

A proper Condenser Mic requires a XLR cable, a 48v phantom power and a stand. With a Pop Filter and A SOUND CARD FOR THE PC.

I am sure we would spend about $300+ for the whole thing? Aside from the tedious amounts of care it needs. The Blue Yeti is Basically PLUG AND PLAY and that IT WILL WORK ON MacBooks AND Laptops AND PC's AND iMac's alike?

EDIT: But all this rant is justified When I saw THIS Link. And I can Vouch, that Shure Mic Works Better than the Blue Yeti!

So you blaming it on cause it is USB 2.0 and not 3.0 or 3.1 of some sort?

IDK what you are doing if you bend cables so much.

I had mine for over a year and it looks like it is brand new... paint is not chipping, cables are not bending, gain and volume knobs definitely don't require superhuman strength.

I find the heavy stand to be a pro... not a con as it is hard to accidentally knock the mic over.

Hinge could be better but it is not bad.

The rubber padding could definitely be a lot better but I made an easy solution for that. I placed black thick soft foam under the mic.

USB 2 outdated? come on

As a Yeti Owner, I agree with the title, but not with all the points

  • I've owned mine for the better part of two years. I've never had the paint scratch, and it's only chipped near the mounting screw holes for the included stand.
  • USB2 might be on its way out, but by no means is it outdated
  • Maybe you got a bad unit? Mine would stand upright with the included mount with ease
  • I've personally never had any issue with jacks or the cables
  • LOL okay dude. You must have gotten a bad unit. The sound setting isnt THAT hard. its mostly an issue with how small the dial is to switch modes. once you get a good grip its not that hard.
  • Have you tied turning the gain down? Like a lot? I have mine set at about 35% and its fine, although my room is fairly quiet.

These points however, are valid (okay maybe not the d*** one, i mean 80% of them do with enough imagination) but the goddamn weight of this thing is just...... ARGH

The included stand does little to prevent any noise or vibrations from being picked up. Putting it too close to (and facing) a keyboard WILL pick up all the sounds it makes.

I nearly broke the cheap arm I bought for it trying to get the arm to stay where I wanted it. Fortunately, Ive got the arm "hanging" upside down from a near ceiling shelf...

Also, finding a shock mount was impossible for the longest time, until I finally found on amazon this mount (get the aluminium one, dont waste your money on the plastic)

But for me personally, the thing that makes me not recommend this most of all, is that I just dont use any of the other features this thing has. I stick to Cardioid, specific gain level, and thats it. I used to use the included headphone jack for no latency monitoring but no more. I dont use omnidirectional or bi directional for left right channels, which is a great selling point of this mic. For the most part I dont regret buying it,but I wouldnt buy it again.

The majority of your points don't make sense...

- Scratches easily? So be more careful?

- Paint chips off easily, is that true or just your unit?

- Looks like a d... Really dude

- Change sound settings takes a lot of strength... Probably a you-problem

- Has outdated USB 2 cables. And? Also  you bought it, you should have known, why complain about it when you made the choice?

I'm not necessarily sure how USB 2.0 is outdated for using a microphone.

I'd bet money that USB 1.1 would be more than sufficient for a microphone used for the purpose of podcasting or streaming, to be realistic.

I see what you did there. ;) Or rather, I feel what you did there. /r/nocontext would love this one.

On a more serious note, I have a friend with the Yeti who has no issues with it, similarly to yourself. Yeah, it's a bit bassy, but for Discord it works great. Also, USB2.0 is completely fine @minervx considering that we don't yet have a 4096-bit 1 BILLION kbps SuperHiDFi LosslesslyAntiLoss codec available. Not that our ears could ever hear the quality difference. :P
