Mac system files takes a lot of space

Hi. So lately I have a problem with my mac. The system files took 300+ GB, now I'm only left with around 4 GB. Right now I'm on macOS Sierra 10.12.1. How do I fix this madness? thanks :)

Use Windows.

Real though you probably need to check ImageMagick image editing library as it rampantly creates large files at /private/var/tmp

Here's how to fix it:

1) Throw away Mac

2) Buy a Windows pc or custom build

3) And, like magic, your problem is solved!!!!

that's some youtube level responses

i would agree it's probably some temporary directory overflowing , like premiere's preview files which will always overrun a windows OS disk real fast.

not helpful, plus some people actually need macs and as a whole macos is a more user friendly os.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I mean window also have this issues as well, if you don't clear your temp/recycle bin. Or even a virus.

so did you see the "manage" button? Click that button. There are tools that will clean up files and there is a tool in there that will tell you what is taking all the space.

I had the same thing but with the applications folder, to fix it I made spotlight re-index with this terminal command

sudo mdutil -i on /  It will take along time there are a few other things you could do as well but I would start with this.

Yeah, sorry was running out of time earlier Open finder press the detail view, the lines to show the details or what ever you want to call it lol. Then press the settings icon or gear and select show view options and calculate all file sizes then you will have to wait a bit, then go for a hunt for the biggest file then google it and see if its relevant,

My guess is that you used to have el capitan or Yosemite and then upgraded and for whatever reason some of the old files didn't get deleted.

You could also give ccleaner a try to see if that clears anything up.

ok, so if you add all of the size up, there is no way it could take up 300+ GB, other method?

I can't think of anything else, try running first aid on the drive in disk utility, and see if that helps.
