Good 450W/550W PSU

VicRik

Hi guys,

Id like to hear your recommendations for a good Lower wattage PSU. My girlfriend will be building a PC soon and I'd love to hear your suggestions. Also what tier on the tierlist would you consider good/adequate.

Thanks!

1060, ryzen 1400. The budget for the PSU is around 60 euros.

I looked at the CX450M but I dont like cable layout that comes with that. Any other suggestions?

What do you mean exactly when you say you "don't like the cable layout"?

The FSP Hydro X, the Corsair Vengeance and the previously mentioned Corsair CX450/550M are all good choices which can be had for around 60 euros.

Be quiet Pure Power 10, 400W

Bitfenix Whisper M, 450W

That are the best ones in northern Europe in that range.

He wantet a good low watt PSU, not a shitty one.

Why do you recommend a shitty one?

What do you mean you "don't like the cable layout"? The cable layout is semi-modular, arguably the best layout for the sake of cable management.

I've used it and it works perfectly, and 3000 other people think the same, according to the Amazon reviews.

You want a shit psu? Here's a shit psu. The photo is of the Dell l375p-00, 375 watts, 11 years old, efficiency somewhere under 60%, and costs 35 dollars more than the 450BT refurbished.

So please, can you tell me what makes the EVGA psu such a shitty piece of tech?

Actually, I would totally take that Dell PSU over the EVGA BT.

Amazon/Newegg reviews are not indicative of quality.  The PSU hasn't been on the market long enough to know the true failure rate of the product.  The sheer volume of the reviews is due only to the price point and the number of units sold.

Now look, I understand you own the EVGA 450BT, so ultimately you will not like hearing if it's low quality, and will be hesitant to believe anything that could create the notion inside your mind that your PSU, which you own, and purchased, is not the best. But I promise you if you keep an open mind here you may come to understandings of that so, so please do not get angry at us, this is all civil discussion.

Firstly, it's not the job of the laypeople to tell you what's wrong with the EVGA 450BT. It's hard to know when there isn't a single review of it, we don't know really anything about it. Some people in the industry probably have some insider knowledge, but no knowledge has been granted to the lay people. So rather, it's ultimately your duty to find what is right with the PSU before purchasing it. And to be blunt, you cannot determine how good any PSU is from an Amazon review. Maybe clothing, yes, other items, yes, but not power supplies. It does not deserve 5 stars for turning the heck on and "working flawlessly" for the 2 weeks the people have had them before they write the review.

Likewise, from a philosophical standpoint, you say it "works perfectly" but without defining perfection this statement ultimately holds little value. Additionally, a single user's experience with a product does not exactly determine how that product will behave for other people when it comes to bulk things in volume.

Last but not least, an 11 year old Dell PSU costing $35 more than the EVGA BT is probably just a third party seller.

That's something that can be said for the shittiest PSU with 2V Ripple and 11V on +12V. Your computer would still work 'perfectly'.

You might loose a Drive or two every once in a while and also sacrifice the life of all other components.

I doubt every single word you said here.

It is shitty because of age, besides that it doesn't look too bad.

It has 375W, yes. But 360W on +12V - the same as many 400W even much later had.

Even my 400W Pure Power 10 is specified with just 2A more on +12V -> 384W.

And why should it have just somewhat under 60% efficiency?
With powerfactor added ontop of the efficiency, maybe.

But if not, it just makes no sense to do something - especially in 2006 or so.

Personally I'd take a LiteOn PSU over every equal known brand one everytime!!

And yes, I have a couple of Liteon PSU and I don't see anything wrong with it...

And the price of specialized OEM ware always is quite high - but the price of used PSU is always on the high side...

Looking through tweakers.net...

I see the XFX TS 550W. Overkill wattage for sure, but it's Seasonic S12G platform (has DC-DC secondary for minor rails) with FDB fan and Japanese capacitors for under budget. I don't know how their support is in Europe, though.

edit: whoops, as pointed out below, I missed the "bronze" in the name, so it's a different unit from what I was thinking and not particularly notable at the price then

be quiet! Pure Power 10 400W would be sufficient and is cheaper and should be very quiet through the majority of the range.

There are a number of other acceptable choices.

Whoops, you're right, missed that. That explains the price.

Well, in budget I guess there's also the old Seasonic S12II 520W Bronze or a new Corsair CX450/CX450M.

I know; the price was €49 (520W S12IIB) instead of €58 (550W TS Bronze) so no reason to pay XFX for the premium for their version/branding/support of largely the same thing. At 49 that seems competitive with the other things available.

And no real reason to use a badly protected group regulated unit for over 50€ also.

Independent voltage regulation and decent protection (14pin Chip, if possible with OTP) should be the bare minimum for decent protection.

Yeah, no. That wasn't what was discussed with you. What was said, was that the EVGA BT is awful, and that Dell one you were calling crap is not crap.

You can get somewhat okay PSUs for under $30 US, but that is usually only when they are on special; the EVGA 450B is currently $16 US (Shipped) after a mail-in-rebate (Not a spectacular PSU, but it ain't a bomb); and the CX450 is quite often below $25 US after mail-in-rebates,

And you can get bad PSUs for over $50 US, such as the EVGA N1 "750W" which is $54 US
