Is ultrawide gaming worth the trouble and problems?

Gdourado

Hello,

I am in the market for a new monitor.

At first I was thinking 32 1440p 144hz.

But then I started to look at ultrawide monitors and they seemed great.

The monitors themselves are beautiful and great in specs, but as I was researching, I started to come across problems and more problems.

Either games don't run at ultrawide resolutions, or they run but the cutscenes don't.

Or the huds are not placed properly, or some in game effects only occupy the 16:9 portion...

Then there are fixes for some games. Until a patch comes along and the fix is broken...

So I ask...

Is the gaming experience at ultrawide so good to compensate for all the trouble?

Cheers

I haven't had an issue with any placement. The cut scene thing was annoying for like the first 5 times. I don't really notice it now. Doesn't pull me out of the game (immersion wise) or anything. If any of those are deal breakers for you though, skip ultrawide.

Well it depends on what games you play whether it's worth it in my opinion but the only game I've had any big issues with was a Rainbow Six game from like 10 years ago

Disclaimer: I am a bit biased, as I love ultrawide gaming and won't ever go back to boring old 16:9.

Now as an ultrawide enthusiast I can tell you that those problems are overblown. While it is true that some games can be stubborn to get to play nicely with ultrawide, you can force it via ini file edits, Flawless Widescreen (wonderful program), or mods. Older games are more mixed in their results though.

The only game I've played that gave me any kind of trouble was Fallout 4. I was able to easily solve that problem by installing a UI replacer mod.

16:9 HUDs and cutscenes are minor annoyances that honestly do not detract appreciably from my experience.

ultrawide user for 2 years here. i have found 3 games that dont work great on an ultrawide. Left for dead 2 has to be played with black bars. Dark souls 1 needs a mod (pretty easy to install) and resident evil 4 was completely unplayable. other than that i have had no problems and cannot see myself going back to a 16:9 anytime soon

I got my ultrawide a few weeks ago and love it, yes you do get the black lines on some things but for me it's a small price to pay for the ultrawide experience, some games on ultrawide are amazing and I wouldn't go bk to a standard moniter now, I have had 22/24/27 and now 34 inch screens he'll I even had duel 27's for a while and still wouldn't go bk to them over the ultrawide, my only issue with the 3440x1440 75+ hz IPS g-sync moniters is the price but if u can afford the price tag there amazing

I am thinking about the Acer XR382CQK.
But the resolution is not the 21:9 usual 3440x1440, but instead is 3840 x 1600.
Ultrawide support is already difficult sometimes with the standard resolution.
Will the Acer res bring extra compatibility issues?
Cheers!
