CRTC (Canada) introduce new regulation for TV providers

WkdPaul

Starting September 1st 2017, the CCTS (Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services) will take TV provider's customer complains and help customers (they previously only took complains from phone and internet provider's customers).

Basically, TV providers have screwed over customer too many times with the mandated "basic package", and the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) was flooded with complains. TV providers had to supply a basic package that would only cost $25, but many providers decided to add fees on top that would make the basic package more expensive than higher tier packages. (more about this can be read in this article from May 2016)

The complaints can be filled through an online form and ALL the fees will be paid by the TV providers, customers won't have to pay anything.

According to the code, starting Sept. 1, television service providers must:

  • Provide customers with a summary and a copy of their contract agreement, which includes the channels or packages they subscribe to, their monthly fees, the length of their contract and how to file a complaint.
  • Clearly set out the details of promotional offers, including the regular price once any discount ends, and any stipulations such as a minimum commitment period.
  • Provide customers with 30 days' notice of price changes.

The CCTS previously handled only telecommunications complaints such as phone and internet services. But it was clear customers needed somewhere to take their beefs about TV providers. In March, the CCTS reported that it received more gripes about television service compared to all other telecom services put together, even though it wasn't taking on TV complaints at the time.

Well that's good, I guess.

But who really still uses their TV as a TV?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

It depends on the age group, cultural group and income level group.  But while 'broadcast television' is seeing a consistent and slow bleed in subscription, there are still a LOT of subscribers.

Too little too late?

For who? :P  If it was designed to boost subscriber rates, the cable companies wouldn't be dragging their feet on it or fudging the rules to charge more.  This is purely for the sake of consumers.
