I am in houston texas where we are getting massive flooding, and my family had to leave our apartment because it was starting to get close and it was already hard to get out due to the enterance being knee deep.

We are safe at a friends third floor apartment,so we will survive, but we are likely to lose some stuff...

I parked my car on the highest ground we could, and moved as much tech stuff as we had time upstairs, but i am very worried about my car and my Ryzen rig i built for my birthday 5 months ago....  i don't have insurance that will cover these things... i only had liability insurance on my car...

but hopefully everything will be fine, because i can't afford to replace it...

Regardless, for those of you in southeast Texas, remember that there is someone out there who loves and wants you. Please, for their sake, for your sake, stay safe, and help out your neighbors if you can.

The water has only flooded about 60 inches. If your computer is upstairs it should be fine.

Are there a lot of power outages there?

There are a few spots in houston without power, but I think most have power.

We have mainly been getting rain.

Most of the power outages are west of us where they got a lot of wind damage.

Quickly, add a rider to your insurance policy for computer parts!

(Yes, you can actually do that, I have a 10K insurance policy for my stuff and it's only $78/year)

I hope you and your family stay safe, that's the most important part :)

Usually there is a delay between when you add stuff like that and when it actually goes into effect.

As someone who has had to ride out quite a few hurricanes, some worse than others, honestly while losing those things would suck; it could be much worse.

From the way it sounds you are safe and dry at the moment which is more important than anything, and i sincerely hope it stays that way.

I should be safe and dry for the rest of this, because the friends apartment is on the third floor, and his complex has not even started flooding at all.

And yeah losing stuff sucks, even more so when you are poor...

aw shit man sorry. I wonder what type of insurance covers what with this? that's gotta be a big question for a lot of people. Full coverage may not even cover floods. I know a lot of renters and homeowners insurance doesn't

I'm far enough inland that only the outermost parts of the hurricane reached me, and even then it was only a little bit of rain.  We had a really bad storm here something like 8 years ago that threw trampolines across the neighborhood, destroyed a ton of roofs, and knocked over our fence.  From what I've read, that storm was nothing compared to Harvey.  I can't imagine what kind of destruction people are dealing with near the coast.

2017: Storm tracked from halfway across the Atlantic via sate lights.  Storm is tracked by aircraft for close inspections.  RADAR scans.  Advanced computer models project paths.  Evacuation plans are put into order.  Communities pack up and flee north.  Storm hits.

1780: "Huh looks cloudy."  "Looks like a storm is coming."  "Mmm, raining now, kinda hard."  "OH GOD I THINK GOD HAS STARTED THE APOCALYPSE!!!  SAVE ME JESUS!!! D:"

Hurricanes can put down some serious rain.

I am from the south eastern tip of Alabama (Wiregrass Area).

Hurricanes are no joke.  If a Cat 3 or above comes, get your butt out of the area.  I seen quiet a few, been through a few.  Best to be way ahead prepared before one hits.

Kind of glad I am in a desert at the moment.  I get to miss out on this hurricane season.

sad thing is insurance rarely ever includes flood insurance as that is almost always a stand alone policy.

where i live some parts require flood insurance if you have a mortgage as the banks wont let you get one without it.
