Do I NEED a "Tier 1" PSU?

Dagnis

So for my future build I'll be going with an i7-8700k, and a 1080ti. I'll be overclocking both to an extent.  I was thinking 800-850 watt would be more then enough, giving me headroom so nothing silly happens.

Anyways. I'm debating between the tier 3 BeQuiet Straight Power 10 (semi mod) at 800w, and the tier 1 BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 11, 850W (full mod). My question is, will I find much benefit in spending the extra $50 for the Power Pro 11?

Tier 3 is what I would recommend for low end gaming PCs. Since you are going to be high end with a 1080ti and 8700k when they launch, you really should get the Tier 1 to get the very best performance and stability.

When you spend lots of money on an i7 8700K and a 1080Ti a Tier 1 PSU would be appropriate in my opinion. And use a PSU power calculater because 800W is more then you probably need anyways.

Never skimp on your power supply.  The extra $50 is well worth it.

It's a piece of your build that gets used ever time you use your computer no matter what you are doing.  It affect every other piece of your build.  Tier 1 or 2!

Looking at the sticky thread it would seem 750W would be fine (since 650w is recommended for top tier, with OC)

800w is more than he needs, a 500w PSU would be sufficient, but efficiency of a PSU is actually peak when its around 50% usage so this would likely fit right in with that build at max draw which will likely be between 450-500w

I'm under the opinion that you don't need a top tier PSU. It's something to help you sleep better at night, but all it'll get you is probably a lower electric bill (by meager percents if anything) and maybe slightly more useful life of those parts (that already have a useful life of "lol that thing is ancient" by the time it dies).

If you're getting a nice hexacore and a 1080 Ti then a  T2 is fine and really you wouldn't be frowned upon for using a T3 unit from me.

Yes and no.

There is a point where you have the optimal unit.
The extra money for the Dark Power Pro isn't a bad idea.

The Extra money for the 850W version is.

550W is more than sufficient for his build.

And SLi/CF sucks. It rarely works these days anyway. Only on some Tripple A Titles it may be a viable idea. For everything else (like Nier Automata) It's just a waste.
