750ti Prices Affected by Stupid Miners?

Go to solution Solved by aisle9,

Miner: "I need an RX 480. There's one for $500! I'll take it!"

Guy selling an RX 480: "Holy shit, someone just paid $500 for a 480? I'd better price mine up there too!"

Guy selling an RX 470: "Whoa, what?! Someone's listing a 480 for $500? Dude, this card is, like, 80% as good! I'm gonna sell it for $400!"

Guy selling an R9 380X: "You mean mining's a thing again? $250!"

Guy selling a GTX 960: "$250 for a 380X?! My card is almost as powerful! I don't have any idea why anyone would pay that much, but whatever, $200 for a GTX 960 it is!"

Guy selling a GTX 750 Ti: "Holy shit these guys are nuts with their prices. I mean, how stupid do they think we are? There aren't any cards worth buying left on the market. Except lower-end stuff. Like a 750 Ti. Which my card is. So by virtue of midrange cards being artificially priced high, there's a lot of demand for my 750 Ti, even if it is exiting the realm of 1080p AAA gaming...$100."

So I'm trying to bring a friend of mine into the PC Master Race as some call it, so I want to buy him a starter video card the 750ti.

If he wants something better, he can buy it himself.

Now I searched for second hand ones and people are trying to sell them for above 100$ where I live, now I remember a couple of months ago I saw people selling them for 50$.

Did the stupid miners influenced the prices even for this card? Or the ones that were selling it for 50$ either trying to get rid of it or didn't knew it was worth more?

I doubt it. The 750 Ti doesn't have enough VRAM for Ethereum's latest epoch and won't run the algorithm.

I think it's just the GPU market itself that influenced the price. Kind of how a sold house raises/lowers the prices of the houses around it.

How about an alternative, more rational scenario:

If there is a shortage in a range of new GPUs, that will drive consumers to purchase second hand GPUs from a generation or three ago.  This creates more demand for older GPUs, including the 750ti, and others and thus brings up their pricing.

In short, if someone buys up ALL the butter, the price of margarine goes up too.

Why be realistic when hyperbole is available?

So, the answer to the thread should be "I Can't Believe It's Not Cryptocurrency"?
