Samsung topples Intel as worlds largest chipmaker

Samsung's semiconductor division has beat Intel in Q2 2017 earnings:

Samsung registered a record profit of $12.6 billion in its second quarter earnings report, but hidden in those numbers lies another milestone. Of its $54 billion in revenue, $15 billion came solely from Samsung Semiconductors -- pushing it above the $14.8 billion that all of Intel brought in. In short: Samsung just ended Intel's 24-year-reign and became the largest chipmaker in the world.

With Ryzen, Windows on ARM with Qualcomm, and now this, it looks like Intel is going to have a rough year...

windows on arm isn't going to replace x86.

intel's mobile (not laptop) division is almost dead at this point, isn't qualcomm performing better than intel chips and thats why the ip7 has nerfed qualcomm so it matches the intel chips?

 

also, doesn't samsung make a fuck ton of other chips?

It's probably most all from NAND with the price being inflated right now due to shortage.

 

Problem with NAND as your majority revenue stream: it's easy to make.  It becomes a commodity in a hurry when pretty much anyone can fab it.

Intel makes many other types as well, both companies other main chips are flash storage. Intel also makes FPGAs, Networking controllers, and chipsets.

derp forgot about that, was mostly thinking wifi/bluetooth/lte.

It changes nothing, Intel's market is just specializing itself as it should.

Intel is not going to have a rough year.  It's business as usual.  Sure they may have to adjust their model a bit. Not the end of big profits though. 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

There's absolutely no problem having NAND as a revenue leader at the rate it's been needed.

I don't think the news was meant to say it's changing the status quo, but a company losing its market lead after something like 24 years on the top is an impressive milestone.

I don't think they even have to do that. There's enough market share for the players involved, if not a need for more.

I didn't mean rough simply from a financial standpoint. There was the coverage that resulted from their presentation in response to EPYC. Also their lawsuit against Microsoft and Qualcomm about Windows on ARM.

Maybe.... but record setting revenue does more on Intel's own side to quell worries than this does to bring them. Just a very large market atm, with lots of growth opportunities.

I'm pretty sure majority of Intel's target customers like the enthusiasts won't be building gaming PCs with a paltry Adreno 540 GPU inside a Snapdragon 835 SoC.
