I think the xbox controllers use a proprietary wireless connection type, only the ps4 controller can be connected using basic bluetooth

Only the XBox One S controller support Bluetooth.

If your laptop doesn't have specifically Xbox One controller wireless support (the tech is there, but don't know if any laptop has it, if they do, definitely less than a handful at the moment of typing), you need to get the wireless module. You just need 1 for multiple controllers.

The wireless drivers can be a bit annoying to deal with as well. I resorted to just using my xbox one controller wired via usb to micro usb cable because I got tired of replacing the batteries all the time.

why not go with a ps4 controller then wireless works great

Meanwhile, I have four Xbox 360 Wirelses gamepads, two Madcatz 'Fightpads' for Xbox 360, a custom built Twin Stick with an Xbox 360 wired PCB inside it for brains and two Xbox 360 Hori EX2 arcade sticks, all just for the PC. :P

Just buy the official receiver, you won't be sorry. I have four 360 controllers hooked up to my htpc and whenever I have people over we can play N64 games and shit. It's awesome! I also have the receiver inside the PC, hooked up to a internal motherboard header so it's like it's not even there.

Because I don't like the PS4 controller, and again, would be stuck replacing batteries all the time. When the batteries run out in the middle of a boss fight in Dark Souls 3, it REALLY sucks. lol.

I had a cheap knock off 360 controller for a while. It works, but I still much rather prefer the xbox one controller - best controller ever made, IMO.

Currently I'm using a generic one since it really was quite the saving in $ and like you said it does work but I fully agree as someone who had a x360 that if Microsoft done something really right it was their controllers.

Personally I wouldn't bother with wireless, the controllers are heavy and at least with my 360 one the battery runs out very quickly so have to buy more batteries.
