If you know the IP of the server, it's better to use that instead IMO. For instance you could create a shortcut to the server easily by right click on desktop, choose new, and shortcut... then enter the IP address for the server. It may ask you for certification if you don't already have one saved.

[edit] oops, sorry forgot that you need to put \\ before the IP address  :D

You need the username and password for the server you want to access.

Hmm, I'm not sure if a root user would count, are you trying to access using root user?

[edit] Anything else about the set up that's non-standard? like it's a VM or something?  I'm trying to think of thinsg that would prevent you from accessing. I did have a problem with something similar one time, I had to wipe the certificate and re-login from windows IIRC. I'm not on my windows OS at the moment so can't check to see the procedure to do that... might not be it anyway, but just saying.

anything that's non-standard?

i'm running ubuntu server 16.04.

the machine isn't a pc, but an actual server (ibm system x3650) from around 2006, but vnc and ssh from windows pc's works fine, so network acces is there.

Yeah, I just meant non standard such as the "server" was a VM, which could be behind a double NAT or something... you'd be suprised at the info some people leave out of their post/specs, lol.

OK, can you try accessing the server from a phone? or another PC that's not windows?  it might be something windows side that'#s stopping the connection I'm thinking.

Also, can you type into a browser on the windows PC

smb://inputIPaddresshere

If that works at least we know that samba is working and that it can access the share. I still think it might be credentials that's stopping this though.

Hmm, I;m stumped then mate, sorry I couldn't be of any help to you here... my linux skills are pretty poor unfortunaterly. I much prefer using freenas over ubuntu server, only thing is if you want to use the server for more than serving it's not good. Are you only using yours as a server? if so might be better to look into freenas/freeBSD/openmediavault etc... I find freenas pretty user friendly in some respects, and for basic media sharing and data storage it's excellent.

Cool, I can definitely recommend freenas 9.10, it is very stable. Have only restarted my server like 5 times in the past year, and all those were due to me moving equipment or power cuts. No downtime attributed to the server function at all.  I use mine as a media server mostly, but also for essential data storage such as backups for the PCs/Laptops etc... one thing I will say is have a backup solution in addition to freenas, or raid, even if it's just a USB disk that you backup occassionally as you never know when shit will happen. I#m not saying freenas isn't great or anything, just that to keep important stuff on a single point of failure is risky is all, we've all had it happen at one time or another with drive failures, or even worse. So if it's important data that isn't kept somewhere else also, it might be good to look into getting a USB drive/wd mycloud or something, just so you are at least covered in the event of a drive failure or system failure. I personally think it's quicker to pull the data off a USB 3.0 drive than to have redundancy built in. Would take longer to rebuild the RAID array than to copy data IMO, plus if the data backup is stored elsewhere at least it might be covered for fire. Anyway, sorry for the ramble.
