Asus GTX 970 fans are killing me!

Hello!

I have just now with my new build come to the conclusion that my graphics card is too loud to be acceptable. Below are pictures after I just start my computer. First picture, bottom left is fan speed for GPU .

This is the exact model I am using: https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GTX970DC2OC4GD5BLACK/

Spoiler

kCdgye0.png

When I change in GPU Tweak the fan speed to User define and makes it so that it should run at 30% speed up until 70 Degrees(C) it still runs at 50-55%.

I have tried to change settings but what ever I do I can not get below 1500 RPM. While gaming it runs 100% at 3000 RPM, I run open headphones and it's getting annoying to game.

Could anyone explain to me what settings to do or what to fix physically fix with the Graphics card?

Thanks for your assistance!

EDIT: When I change mode on GPU Tweak II then it lowers the fan to 30% but then springs back to 50% by some reason. Maybe that can help.

First I need to which model of your GTX 970. Is it ones with an axial fan setup or a radial fan?

Not really sure but I think Axial fans? It looks like this GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5-BLACK_3D_400.png

That's the axial fan setup on most AIB models.

Try uninstalling GPU Tweak II and testing it without to see if the fans behave the same without. Then re-install GPU Tweak II. If the behavior persists, then I recommend MSI Afterburner.

Or if you're willing to spend some money on a good 120mm AIO liquid cooler like the Corsair H50, you can then add the NZXT Kraken G12 bracket onto that card to liquid cool the thing.

please dont do this.. that's such a terrible idea...

on topic: uninstall any fan tweak software you have running, see if that solves the issue at least temporary. you dont happen to have AIsuite running do you? this defenately sounds like some weird software issue, trying to fix that by bodging the hardware is a straight up terrible idea.

Not like that the AIO is going to fail. If that's the case, might as well say that other models that integrate an AIO liquid cooler like the EVGA Hybrid models are just as terrible of an idea like anything else. As long as anyone follows the instruction manual, nothing should go awry during the installation process.

but what the AIO is gonna do is fix the symptom, rather than fix the problem, as well as do a terrible job cooling the already quite "on edge" VRMs on the card. (from an asus GTX970 owner, those VRMs arent quite taken very "spacious")

i seriously doubt this is a hardware issue, you'd be stupid to fix it by strapping on different hardware. its not about AIO gpus being terrible as a whole, its about it being a very inefficient fix in this specific case.

The first option I listed out is to uninstall the program. Did you just jump straight to the second option I laid out on the table? Remember there's more than one option available at anyone's disposal.

Ok so uninstalling GPU Tweak II did nothing but when I uninstalled AI suite 3 it now works.

Although.... That AI suite program was quite nice to have, easy overclock easy fan monitoring.

I now see that my CPU is clocked at 4.6 GHz, is that something to worry or is a temperature of ~75 degrees alright?

Just be glad its not a GTX 970 G1 Gaming. Reviewers seem to have gotten cards with fans that had the best/quietest motors. Because the ones on mine are extremely loud @ 70oC.

Edit: as for the fan speed, on my GTX 970 the fans run at the same RPM from 30% all the way up to 50%, then the fan speed actually starts to increase. And I only had that problem after updating it to the latest BIOS, so its possible that the problem could be fixed by updating the BIOS (aka the results might be the exact opposite of what I had).

i've had less than pleasing experiences with my gigabyte HD5770 back in the day.

also, i wouldnt be surprised if that was the case, i've always noted a very odd gap between people talking about reviews of G1's, and people talking from personal experience with G1's.

that said, i still dont understand glass sidepanels, just having some sound dampening material isntead of glass comes a long way sound wise :D

The weird thing is, I've got an 80mm and 120mm fan from the same manufacturer-Powerlogic. At the same RPM they are silent unlike the fans on my 970, and at full speed you only hear the sound of the air over the blades. These fans were pulled from a 2004 workstation BTW.

thats because there's more to "fan noise" than just the noise of the fan itself ;)

The difference between a motor whining and airflow is very distinct....
