Can this CPU hold up?

A friend of mine has a low-end prebuilt with an A10-5800K APU. Among other games, he really wants to play Overwatch. He can only get about 20FPS right now with significant drops, which isn't really playable. I have my old GTX 760 I'm willing to sell him for cheap, but will it even help? Basically I'm asking do you guys think the bottleneck is the CPU or the iGPU in this case?

He lives 4 hours away or I would have done just that.

The only reason I think a new GPU might help is that I had him boot up a bot game in OW and he said the CPU usage in task manager was only like 30-50%.

Yes, that will definitely help, and yes I would think the CPU is the bottleneck since it is using the onboard graphics. So a separate dedicated GPU will definitely help in game performance.

It is trash in 2017, based on a crappy low IPC architecture that is under the old Phenom II's in terms of performance.

Yeah but that doesn't help does it, not everyone has the money to throw at a new system, and in this case a GPU would help a lot. Please explain to me how "No it's trash" even remotely helps answer the question.

A better GPU will always help. I had a single core AMD Sempron 140 and was using it as i was waiting for my PC parts. I got my GPU and added it to the system and it helped alot. Sure it was bottlenecked but was still an improvement nonetheless.

I appreciate your opinion about the CPU, but Damascus is right in that it's what he already has and he can barely afford my 760 and a new PSU with enough wattage to power it. He will upgrade down the line but I was asking if it will "hold up" as in be able to gain some FPS with a new GPU, or if the CPU speed was a hard limit.

There's an easy way to know: look at blizzard's official minimum specs :P

https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/Overwatch-System-Requirements

The minimum is a Phenom (not a Phenom II, the original Phenom) X3. Suffice to say the A10-5800K is a race horse compared to that, your friend is mostly missing powerful graphics since the minimum listed is something like a GTX 460 which is still ahead of the 5800K's iGPU. So your 760 will give him a playable experience. How good we don't know until you test :)

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

There's an easy way to know: look at blizzard's official minimum specs :P

https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/Overwatch-System-Requirements

The minimum is a Phenom (not a Phenom II, the original Phenom) X3. Suffice to say the A10-5800K is a race horse compared to that, your friend is mostly missing powerful graphics since the minimum listed is something like a GTX 460 which is still ahead of the 5800K's iGPU. So your 760 will give him a playable experience. How good we don't know until you test :)

Awesome, thanks :)

As soon as he has enough for my card + PSU we'll install it

I have a friend with an AMD A6-3650 who previously couldn't play Overwatch due to the onboard graphics, but he threw a 1050 Ti in there (no extra power connectors and only a 300 watt PSU) and he's able to run on high settings with 60 fps no problem now. He could do Ultra since that card is more than capable for Overwatch, but the CPU is holding him back a little bit there.

With the A10, it should be a decent bit better than my friend's setup on the CPU front. He should be juuuuust fine for Overwatch with a GTX 760.

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

I just came from a thread where a dude killed a system, and everyone was so nice, then I came here. One minute my day was made, the next it was ruined because you people are getting angry, and treating others horribly simply because you don't like their older hardware, newsflash, not everyone has money, and not everyone has opportunity, answer their questions and be polite, chances are your new hardware has given you some kind of mindset that allows you to take for granted the things they cherish, and here you are insulting it, looking like an idiot.

Please people, let's be respectful.

Now, here, that CPU is capable of running battlefield 3, I know that for sure, provided it has a powerful enough CPU, so I assume it could easily run over watch with some optimization on that dedicated GPU, but no, you will want to get a better system / cpu in the future if you wish your friend to have an enjoyable time in future AAA games, it's just a little bad in the single core performance, which is what matters, I suggest either upgrading to Ryzen, or waiting for Intel Coffee Lake cpu's.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @3.7ghz (1.3v) Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 GPU: Zotac Mini GTX 1060 Case: NZXT - S340 (Black/Blue) Mobo: MSI B350m mortar arctic

RAM: Team Vulcan DDR4 (2x4gb, 2666mhz) Storage: Toshiba 1tb 7200rpm HDD, PNY CS1311 Sata SSD (6gb/s) PSU: EVGA - BQ 500w 80+ Bronze semi modular
