The machine I use at work has an i5... but then again I was an intern when I received this and ever since being hired on... as the main Tech of the company I say I deserve at LEAST an i7! But I've actually been debating the R7 1700 so I can fully utilize local VMs as I test. For now the servers provide my poor old i5 with power and I simply deal with remoting in constantly.

With that being said... I never thought I'd live to see the day I'd have to USE ONE OF THESE THINGS. i5 FTL.

*sighs and watches the joke sail over peoples heads* It was in jest about the R5 making the i5 line pretty much redundant in 2017 due to price/performance, core/thread count and future proofing,

That joke would only work if the R5 has actually done anything to reclaim marketshare from i5's. Which it really hasn't yet :/

Only it didn't... i5 7600 is faster then Ryzen 5 1600 and the same price.

i5 7600 has 15% faster single-core speed and 20% faster quad-core speed.

R5 1600 has more cores and it better at multitasking but those tasks are very specific.

R5 has only had a month, however if you start a new pc partpicker build and choose cpu 1st the R5 is something like 3rd? This indicates how many people are using it in their new builds. It takes a long time to coax people away from buying intel because it is familiar

Core speed is not as relevant as IPC where ryzen is only 5-10% behind and if you understood how saturated those 4 threads are in current titles (95-100% usage at all times) then you'd understand why the current i5 has no future and why ryzen with its vastly more cores than threads is the better future option and kills it at the same price point. 4 threads are no longer enough so I would expect 4c/8t to be the next gen i5 (current i7) and the i7 to be a (unless intel can continue to sell enough 4c/4t processors to gullible misinformed consumers)

Most games the i5 is still better.

Only on a few games the 1600x has few more fps(GTA V, Civ 6).

I'm too lazy to copy and paste it from another thread, also its a pain because i'm at work. But go watch AdoredTVs 1500X/1600X review its about 13 minutes in (skip benchmarks i'm sure you've seen plenty) and listen to the last section of the video. It explains what I was getting at very well and why the i5 and quad core in general has a short life and bad value compared to the 1600
