gaming Should I build this gaming PC?

I'v never built a PC before and I wanted to try it. My budget is around 1000$.

This is not supposed to be for VR or something, but i expect it to be a good gaming PC.

This is what I came up with...

Motherboard - Asus Prime B250M 
CPU - Intel Core I7 7700tray
GPU - Nvidia geforce GTX 1060

Is this good? Where can i upgrade this computer without going overbudget?

The only things I would change there are the case. I would go less expensive, and invest the money in a 600+ watt PSU. With the Intel you are stuck. No cpu upgrade path, no memory upgrade path (too ddr5) etc. With the AMD setup, the upgrade path is huge for the forseeable future, and the 1070 compared to the 1060 gpu is going to make such a big difference.

Change case to what? S340 is great.

 

With amd, you won't be able to upgrade to ddr5 without switching the CPU, mobo, and ram you know. The upgrade path is better since am4 should be around until 2020 but that's not true.

few things here:

- you're gonna have difficulty going lower price on a still acceptable case

- from the owner of a 750 watt power supply, 600 watt is such overkill

- how much of an upgrade path do you expect there to be for zen? i dont see much more than R7 happening, which i wish you good luck finding a big list of games that truly need more than 6 cores

- what are you even on about with memory upgrade path? please clarify.

I understand, I just feel money is better spent on parts that are more practical, especially when on a budget.

 

Also, of course he will have to switch boards, not necessarily the cpu as they may (and with AMD would not be surprised) if they use software to enable new boards that support ddr5 with the current chipsets. Plus, they will be making new cpu's that fit in current boards anyway if he just wants a cpu upgrade, whereas with the i7 he is locked in with nowhere to go.

If amd can't even support over 4000 MHz ram there's no way it's gonna support gddr5 which is gone ane over that.

I'm not 100% sure on this but RAM support, I think, is tied into the transistors inside the IMC itself. You can't change them. How would you support DDR5 with a Ryzen CPU then?

 

EDIT: Anyhow it's right at 1k, and the S340 is really the best case by far in that price range. I'd say it's justified.

You're right. It is tied to imc, and with the current challenges of getting 3k out of RAM, it is pretty doubtful. Thank you for the splash of reality (better than ice water).

It's tied to the board and the chipset itself. You have a prime example with DDR3L and DDR4 with Skylake/Kaby. 

 

@crzyces It's unlikely that they will be able to move the memory controller forward as DDR5 isn't really known about at the moment and hasn't been finalized just yet, accoding to JEDEC.

Wait so theoretically if you had a new board and chipset you could use DDR4 on a 4790k?

Technically yes, but there would have to be serious irc adjustments/optimization.

No. It is unlikely for anyone to have compatibility with a future rendition of RAM. Unless someone does something radical, it won't be likely. DDR3L was common when Skylake was rolled out while DDR4 was newly released. This made it easy for Intel to grab both markets depending on which would succeed.

At least we are all in agreement. Go with the AMD build. More cores, EZ OC, and better upgrade path, though what exactly it will entail is partially theoretical and debatable.

I'd also agree with everybody else in that AMD is a better option overall, though I would add that even though Ryzen has pretty ez OC it's not as efficient or powerful as intel OC

 

though that's probably not a big factor either way.

If you can get parts from microcenter and go $100 over budget I can get the price down to about $1100

And I'd go with the 1600/x as 6/12 oc'd to the 3.8-4.1 area will be smoking fast with a decent gpu for years. Even not OC'd he'd be good, and under the 1k mark by a good margin.

 

I wonder why ddr 5 is still a *concept* for system memory, but has been in gpus as vram for ages. What is the holdup here? Heck, we have hbm ready to go into cards now.
