I have a 3 year freebie of MSDN so technically I didn't, but if it's cheap enough and I can afford it when my freebie ends, I'll probably renew my subscription so then I suppose I'd be paying for it then.

I've never pirated any software. Hell, I bought like 4 copies of Age of Empires 1, 2 AND 3 since I kept losing them. Though, I found them (ALL OF THEM) when I moved to Florida.

fresh install of windows 8 -> updated to windows 10 -> format and reinstall windows 10

I never licensed it. I ran it with the watermark for a while, but I had to reinstall at some point, and Microsoft recognized it as licensed and licensed it. So, Windows for free!

I have a Win 10 Education on my PC for free but that doesn't mean I got it illegally/pirated/not activated

I upgraded to it on several machines to lock the key to the hardware, then downgraded back to Win7.  I gradually upgraded back to 10 on the machines I was comfortable using it on.  My other machines, I more recently purchased, came with it preinstalled.

If you do not activate Windows you get a black background in your desktop which is what you current avatar looks like so that's why @ARikozuM said
