Not necessarily. Different OS, means that they need to work with different libraries, which may have bugs or limitations, or just don't exists. For example, Firefox uses Direct2D to render text being displayed on pages. DirectX is Windows only. Mozilla needs to use Linux based OS equivalent libraries. Same applies for hardware acceleration, and other components of the web browser.

but the webpage sees none of that. the way the webpage interfaces with the browser is identical, presuming you're on the same engine version. all the differences are on the backend, which is entirely seperate from the website.

I don't see how I could ever get any actual work done if I switched. And I don't see that changing anytime in the near future. Plus I like Microsoft's UI interpretation too much.

The web dev needs to insure that:

 1- The website works no matter what.

 2- That the website is being displayed properly, to the design specs, no matter what.

 

Web browsers engine devs role is not about ensuring that every popular website shows and operates fine (although, they sometimes do that for q quick fix), they are about supporting web standards the closest they can while maximizing performance. And this where you have issues. Many points in the different web standards is open to interpretation, and because you seek performance, sometimes things that was tested to be working right, doesn't cover the corner case a website might have used

Honestly if Vulkan gets more popular up there is no reason to stay on Windows. Most tools that were exclusive now have free counterparts. They might not be as good but are open source and free. So more users would make the end product better.

Calm down there and try it for yourself. I just gave Elementary OS a spin this week. I thought to myself "After all theses years, I'm sure Linux is better and you don't have to fuck around in the terminal". Within 10 minutes of using it, I had to dig into command lines. My bluetooth headphones had a 1 second delay making watching video impossible. After re-pairing them, they only worked with the shitty "phone profile". The trackpad of my macbook was working like shit. Had to install a 3rd party driver to ignore resting thumbs and support multitouch clicks... Again, took forever in the command line installing manually multiple dependencies. Scrolling ain't smooth as OSX. Hell it's ain't as smooth as Windows.

 

I seriously want to love Linux. I use it everyday at work on all my servers. But that's all it's good for. Command line. Compatibilty and usuability is not there yet (after all theses years, seriously !?). 

 

I'll try it again in 5 years...

Citation Needed on this being caused by a bug in GNU/Linux or Firefox and not on Microsoft's side. 

To me it is pretty clear what happened. Microsoft either forgot to add the GNU/Linux user-agent to the list of browsers that should get the best version of the page, or they did it to sabotage.

My guess is on the former. 

 

But the issue is clearly on Microsoft's side since it works fine as soon as you spoof being in Windows or spoof using IE/Edge.

This was (first?) discovered on reddit, and somebody claimed that spoofing his user agent string to a stupid user agent string, and it broke, but if he changed it to a more sensible one, then it broke differently. He concludes that microsoft can't into user agent string detection. But people aren't ready to lower the pichforks just yet.
