AMD Kaveri APU Launch Details: Desktop, January 14th

"Kicking off today is AMD’s annual developer conference, which now goes by the name APU13. There will be several APU/CPU related announcements coming out of the show this week, but we’ll start with what’s likely to be the most interesting for our regular readers: the launch date for AMD’s Kaveri APU."

 

"First and foremost, AMD has confirmed that Kaveri will be shipping in Q4’13, with a launch/availability date of January 14th, 2014. For those of you keeping track of your calendars, this is the week after CES 2014, with AMD promising further details on the Kaveri launch for CES."

 

"Second of all, we have confirmation on what the highest shipping APU configuration will be. Kaveri will have up to 4 CPU core (2 modules), which will be based on AMD’s latest revision of their desktop CPU architecture, Steamroller. Meanwhile the GPU will be composed of 8 GCN 1.1 CUs, which would put the SP count at 512 SPs (this would be equivalent to today's desktop Radeon HD 7750). Furthermore AMD is throwing around a floating point performance number – 856 GFLOPS – which thanks to some details found in AMD's footnotes by PCWorld gives us specific clockspeeds and even a product name. A10-7850K CPU clockspeed 3.7GHz, GPU clockspeed 720MHz."

Looks like there will only be 4 cores. I guess there keeping there custom 8 core APU for Sony and Microsoft. I also don't think you would need more then 4 cores with the HSA. Hopefully more programmers will use HSA.

THIS IS APPROACHING THE TERRAFLOP BOUNDRY!! THAT IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE! That means it's just below a fifth of the performance of an R9 290X in compute - it literally is getting close to graphics card level compute performance

AMD Radeon HD 7750 = 819 GFLOPS

AMD A10-7850K  =  856 GFLOPS

AMD A10-6800K = 779 GFLOPS

This will be a very interesting option for the budget/casual gamers out there and for LAN and media rigs.

HSA isnt out there enough to warrant APU only in my opinion.. steamroller FX with the rumored performance improvements would put the next FX CPU above intels mainstream interms of performance. hopefully they do 1 more octocore before they move to APU only with mayby hexacore APU's

FX isn't dead. if anything they are going to merge the APU/FX lineup into one. 8 Core Steamrollers with a beefy GPU and HUSA (or HSA or whatever it is). That will solve the floating point performance issues of current FX chips

All with the awesome TDP of 225w

They already said there isn't enough die space of temperature control to do this.  They are trying for a 6 core triple module with a stronger graphics core but that's a long ways away.

My sons A8-6600K gets 26fps at 1080p,  all low/off settings. Overclocked CPU at 4.2Ghz and GPU at 1Ghz.
