AMD Kaveri APU Launch Details: Desktop, January 14th

digitalnav

They already said there isn't enough die space of temperature control to do this.  They are trying for a 6 core triple module with a stronger graphics core but that's a long ways away.

Isn't Jaguar an 8 core APU?

Isn't Jaguar an 8 core APU?

you mean the PS4 APU?

Yes, but the individual cores are meant for mobile, so imagine an 8 core kabini processor.

Well all this is nice, but i am not sure will AMD be able to pull of an 8 core APU, the core size should be super small to fit that. On the Other hand i am waiting for the 100% conformation of the FX R.I.P. This would be sad, because if calculations are right, steamroller should be the same or very close to Sandy Bridge IPC on a single core.

So imagine an 8 core at 200 $ that will have the same core performance as an 3930k w/o HTT and have 2 extra cores, this should be a monster, and really give Intel a run for it's money!!!

Sure HTT would help the 3930k to have some edge, but it still costs twice as much!

It is not a true 8 core, the APU in the consoles is actually 2 quad core chips combined, so it is not the same as an FX CPU

aaaand where did you get this idea?

It's only 1 chip. It's just using a mobile architecture.

The jaguar is a very low powered low speed apu. But yhe fx series and a series are noy 2 quad cores put together. An fx 8350 hs a 4 module cpu that has 2 cores per module.

Anyone know what socket these will be using? I'm looking at building a Mid-Tier Budget gaming computer for my brother for christmas and if this will be using AM3+ or FM2 Socket i'll build that out with a cheaper processor then upgrade down the line.

I'm still new to PC, as in less than a year. Does anyone know when the enthusiast stuff usually starts rolling out on a new socket?

Go to the end of the bottom of the page. Title PS4 and XBone

No APU is designed as an 8 core, not to mention Linus mentioned this like a 100 times on the WAN show

Yes it is a single chip, because it's custom, this is a similar way Intel used to combine 2 dual core dies for core 2 quads i believe.

2 dies share L2 cache

The new Haswell-E will come late 2014, Intel has changes for mainstream platforms every 2 generations, but the high end platform stays for more generations, but that does not mean you can use the same mobo for 3 gens, AMD uses a single socket for an eon, like AM3 was here since the dinosaurs...

Kaveri would be nice for setting up a little Steambox on the living room, it will run your light games with no problem, and if you want to go hard, you can always stream from the main PC. 130$ Kaveri APU + find cheap mATX/mITX FM2+ mobo, if you can find high speed ram for cheap go for it, if not stay low, and a SFF PSU (nothing too fancy, won't need more than 200W), and we are good to go.
