Are we trusting Google a lot?

In a not so remote past, we thought they were seeing our e-mails. Then, they could know our searches on the net. Now, "they are the cloud", they host our personal and family photos, our favorite channels selections, our chat conversations, and our text documents. This so-called innocent cloud can make our lives easier by saving our passwords and taking care of our calendar. Today, they are also ISPs, been able to trace just anything we do online. Even if you're not their customer, you may use their browser, which is awesome, but I can't say the same about its privacy. They sell machines we put in our homes to ask anything, while the device hears every word we say. They can check our phone's GPS. They have the largest map and satellite image service, seen every single place on the globe, many times with a camera passing by car in front of our homes. They are mobile networks, so it's possible to hear our conversations. They run the keyboard of our phones to know what we type. They sell routers to make home wireless easier and to collect data. They own data centers that host a big number of information from big companies. They have autonomous cars. They commercialize domains and provide reCAPTCHA. They translate anything to anything and, most important, they know what we do translate. We can pay things with their services... They.............

Even a simple app developer has a great power in hands. The problem is not about Google, but about the world we have today. The point is that Google has many data for just one company.

Get a free domain, and get a basic (ish) server. You'll be able to do just that.

 

A great place to learn the knowledge would be from the channel that posted that video, and the only other thing you'd have to pay for is the electricity.

Yeah, running the server isn't the problem. The problem is on how to replace the variety of different services they provide, not only storage and other simple stuff.

I go through the effort of opting out of everything when I create accounts. I'm lucky to have older google accounts that weren't forced to have G+ and has a few options that aren't available in accounts made after the initial g+/youtube integration. I regularly check my google accounts to make sure that google hasn't pulled a microsoft and reverted my settings. 

 

To the person saying you miss out by attempting to stay private, I disagree with that. I haven't missed out on anything because I have been anal about these kinds of things since I got my first email during my teens. The only thing I give moderate leeway to are things like "assistant" apps when I initially try em out. I use a bs account not tied to anything else, and make sure that I am using an assistant where I could wipe everything and do so when I'm done trying them out.

put whonix on it

only use tor in conjunction with a no logs kept VPN you paid for with bitcoin but you set up that bitcoin with cash too

Yes, we trust them too much Imo. I like to avoid Google wherever possible, but of course I have to use YouTube and my school forces us to have a student gmail account. I would rather put my data with companies that have a better track record of keeping your data yours. I won't say who I think those companies are because though because the internet will take things too far.

We live in a world where security often comes as a second thought to convenience. That being said Google is very secure and whatever leeriness that I have towards everything being in the cloud, is strongly outweighed by the convenience of not having to manage an exchange server for over 1,400 employees and over 5,000 students.

That is not an opinion, and it's not true. Google care about every single fish in the vast ocean, because that's how they make money. They also have a track record of sharing this information with others, with different interests than profit, so even if you trust Google for unknown reasons (it's not like you know them :P), what you make available to them is available to many others as well.

The idea that "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry" is social cancer.

 

We can all make our individual choices, but the idea that we can simply watch any person, company, or entity in general accumulate power (and the extent to which Google controls information is power) without giving a simple thought to it, and even repress any incipient doubt and "just carry on" is dangerous. The decision to simply sheep on from birth till slaughterhouse is valid, but not something I would encourage. On the contrary, OP: stay alert, keep questioning things. Don't sing along to "Everything is Awesome" :P

That is not an opinion, and it's not true. Google care about every single fish in the vast ocean, because that's how they make money. They also have a track record of sharing this information with others, with different interests than profit, so even if you trust Google for unknown reasons (it's not like you know them :P), what you make available to them is available to many others as well.

Google isn't the only company that collects our data with a ravenous appetite. I don't trust Google, I just distrust other companies more than Google. But I don't let it control how I look at technology and how I use it. 

 

There's so many other things people say all the time that is much worse of a social cancer than "Have nothing to hide, have nothing to worry about". I'm not going to specify them for obvious reasons.

 

I'm not going to be a sheep during my life, but there's a difference between living your life and being paranoid about this. 

 

For the record, I'd be more concerned with how much governments, especially the US government, collects our data and tracks us. Google simply wants to make money off us while the government wants to keep us compliant and oblivious to things that matter, like said government abusing its power and overstepping its bounds. Which one do you think is worse?

Legally they have to be, they dont really have a choice (Other than shutting down). Google is still pretty transparent where possible, they have a transparency report.

God only knows what they are doing with all the data they collect. Dont they have the biggest storage farm in the world. The NSA's lips water over that info.

Not joking at all. They collect data and sell it commercially for profit (Got to make money somehow), they only cooperate with the NSA because they have to legally. Didn't say NSA doesn't take the data though, ofc they do.
