Media Server Software Reccomendations

I have an old box running Ubuntu Server 16.04 with 2 gigs of RAM, an old AMD Sempron 3000+ to its name. I have a bunch (around 11 GB) of music files that I'd like to stream from it so I don't have to haul it all around on any device that I could conceivably want to listen to music on.

I know Linus has done a video on this subject, and I was tempted to go with Plex per his recommendation, however, Plex has decided to change their business model(?). I don't enjoy the idea of subscribing to Plex so I can listen to my music that has a length of more than 1 minute.

I tried using Subsonic for a time, but I later installed email functionality to the server and, for some reason, it stopped working. For me to use Subsonic, I'll need to either need to install it on another box, or work out what went wrong in the first place. In either way, I don't see me doing because computers don't grow on trees, and I'm not an expert at linux.

So I'm asking you guys this, what software could I use for my purposes. I have an android phone so bare that in mind.

Hi

to clear things up a bit, are you trying to stream music from your media server to your phone?

That is correct.

You could just bypass the server altogether and just use Google Play Music, it's free for up to 50k songs iirc. You'll need to upload them, but hey, it's a very good way of streaming music.

idk

Troubleshoot Linux and fix it back to what it was. Learning Linux will be the easiest and most future-helping option. You will like Linux :D

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Where did you hear that you need a paid pass to listen for more than a minute?  Unless you need the sync feature to listen offline a free account should work for you.

Issue with this is that, I'd like to keep my music stored on computers I own.

I know I'll like Linux, because I already like linux. it's just that I don't know all the ins and outs of the operating system and I don't know where it could break in such weird cases such as this.

When I installed Plex on my server and tried to test it out. I tried Plex first, installed it (their tutorials are out of date btw), installed the app on mobile, and i found the limitation. maybe I turned something on last time. I'll take a look at it again.

For Android there's a one time $5 fee to unlock the app but no charges after that.

Try Emby. I'm not sure if you have to have the subscription to do what you want to do.

Or setup a DLNA server and use a DLNA app and VPN into your network.

you can just use the web ui at http://ipaddress:32400 and replace the ipaddress with the ip address that your plex server is setup to or even url

Yeah, i've tried that  but the trick is to

  1. get it installed on my machine
  2. do that in the first place (the computer that I use to SSH with the server, for whatever reason has an unagreeable relationship with the server and accessing webpages that are hosted on that server.

Plex installation is easy.

If you have accesed the login page atleast once, you can use the web player from there on out to configure (most) of the settings.

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

the installation part is easy. logging in through a different computer, that's the bitch. I'd do it on the server itself, but it doesn't have a web browser (because it's the server version of ubuntu) and it's rather insistant on not being logged into.
