Sony announced today at MWC 2017 that it’s bringing two new premium phones to the US market: the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs. Both models employ classic Sony styling—a rectangular shape with rounded sides and a flat top and bottom. They also have an aluminum frame sandwiched between front and rear Gorilla glass panels.

There are a few significant differences between the new Xperias. For starters, the XZ Premium will use Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, the first to use semi-custom ARM CPU cores and the first SoC available on Samsung’s new 10nm process. The XZs will use the previous generation Snapdragon 820, which uses four fully-custom Kryo CPU cores.

The XZ Premium is the larger of the two with a 5.5-inch TRILUMINOS display, which is notable for being the first panel to combine 4K resolution with HDR image support. It will be interesting to see if the display runs at 4K all the time or just when watching 4K content, scaling back to 1080p otherwise. The XZs puts a 5.2-inch 1080p TRILUMINOS display into a smaller chassis. Both displays support Sony’s X-Reality picture engine and Dynamic Contrast Enhancement technology.

Sealed inside the XZ Premium is 3230 mAh battery, which is a little smaller than I would like to see for a 5.5-inch class phone with a high-resolution 4K display. A smaller chassis means an even smaller battery for the XZs at 2900 mAh. Based solely on this information, I’m a little concerned about battery life, but we’ll have to wait until devices start shipping to see how long they last. Both phones at least support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging.

Quote

The Xperia XZ Premium comes in two colors—Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black—while the Xperia XZs offers three color options—Ice Blue, Warm Silver, and Black. The XZs will be available at select retailers, including Amazon and Best Buy, on April 5 for $699.99 (64GB). The XZ Premium will need to wait for the Snapdragon 835 SoC to become available, so it will not go on sale until later in the spring. Sony is not listing a price for it either, but it will most certainly cost more than the XZs.

Well, it looks like Sony kept the 4k display, however what I'm more interested in is the 835. We haven't seen any benchmarks of it and I wonder how well it will perform. What are you guys's thoughts?

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Good news for Sony having the first 835. Shame LG could not get one in their G6. This would definitely be the phone i would buy as it has both an 835 and a headphone jack. I'm looking at you Samsung S8.

Since when has anyone indicated the S8 won't have a 3.5mm headphone jack?

All renders/pics/videos I've seen that show the bottom indicate otherwise.

It's cool that they made it, but 4k is a little overkill for a 5.5 inch screen- at least to me.

I remember wanting that original 4k Sony phone, but the big US service providers never seem to offer Sony devices anyway so I couldn't get one if I wanted to. -_-

It's not really a 4K, I'll bet it'll have adaptive res just like their first phone had.

I was actually getting worried that I had missed something. I plan on getting the S8, but would just get the G6 if samsung decided to drop the headphone jack.

I'm not overly interested in Sony's phones. They're boring and the same thing every year. The bezels should definitely be smaller, as should the chin and forehead. I have a buddy who loves them though and he'll definitely be buying this on release.

The Premium seems like a pretty good phone.  If the display scales back to 1080 though most of the time, that'd be disappointing.

I'm on iOS now (7 Plus), but always eyeing switching back to Android if one of the OEM's puts out a compelling enough phone, primarily having to tick all the display, camera, and DAC boxes.

Well until recently I've had my upgrade pricing that was worth taking advantage of.

Now getting an unlocked version would be a viable option, but I'd still be hesitant to drop a hefty amount on a device I couldn't at least try in person first.

Thats fair. I'm pretty used to biting the bullet, I haven't purchased a phone on contract since the iphone 3gs. Last phone was the 2013 moto x which I wasn't so happy with, but was stuck with till I decided in november it get this sony.

They both look like nice devices.  It'll be interesting to see how they compare to each other with the difference in screens and processors.  I wouldn't mind going for the regular XZ if they perform the same due to the lower screen resolution.  Would love to have a good Sony camera sensor on my phone. xD

Yeah, I still have the G3. I was going to buy a Note 7 but we see that turned out. I'm thinking S8 just because of the Snapdragon 835.  I feel like if I was to get the G6 I might as well just get one of the many Snapdragon 820 devices for significantly cheaper.

i'm pretty sure the S8 will be available for purchase before the XZ Premium though, since the XZP is slated for a "late spring" release. Depending on how much it will cost, I may consider replacing my Xperia Z5 Premium with this one, since they have finally gotten it right with this design imo (i.e. no plastic frame and plastic strip on the back a la XZ). The wrap-around glass is a very interesting design choice and the camera tech also seems very promising.
