ISPs ask lawmakers to kill privacy rules

The summary of it is that Republicans want to overturn a privacy rule that requires "home and mobile ISPs to get opt-in consent from consumers before sharing Web browsing data and other private information with advertisers and other third parties."  The argument behind the push to overturn is that it will confuse consumers and make it harder for them to receive customized services.  Overturning this could let ISP share your information by default and make opt-out a challenging task.  It us unknown what would happen if the rule were to be overturned.

I really don't understand the political motivation for this.  Yeah ISP's are going to kick a few thousand to you during campaign season, but this is a gold mine for opposition attacks.

Politics for politics sake. Fuck everyone but them.  Politics needs to be removed from tech and we have to get these people who are tech illiterate out of tech decision making. Why do politicians and a lot of their constituants see issues as black or white when its never that simple. 

 

On a side note, i'm already missing Wheeler.

No, they are totally confused/lying. Customers actually want something, they have an intent to purchase and know what they are looking for. We don't want ADs, we won't get confused. In fact we'll get really damn pissed off with unsolicited bullshit being tried to get sold to us that we never wanted in the first place.

Republicans typically push for smaller government, and less government control over businesses. What's happening here is that internet service providers are asking members of the dominant party in congress, the republicans, to vote to have these restrictions removed so that they can have more power over consumers (mind you, the same people that generally have no power outside of voting).

 

The issue stems from internet service providers wanting to screw consumers over more than they already are, the only reason politics are involved is that the current dominant party is more likely to vote to remove these restrictions, since "less regulation" seems to be a blanket statement of the party's preferred policies.

This is why I want to remove parties from the equation of politics as I think they muddy the water and both provide some benefits but with terrible side effects. But how to ban parties is a question that I don't have an answer for.
