I don't think there is much to change about LED modules. Most of the LED driver chips I know of are pretty old as well.

 

This one though, is the chip that drives basically ALL LED strips we know and love. This is from 2008, and it works pretty damn well...

My point was that cars have had RGB for years. Long before the computer RGB craze.

 

the module actually got a new chip which relplaced the two old ones used to control the LED. Made everything much simpler and quicker to build.

Ford has had RGB for years. They call it Ambient Lighting.
