Worth it to switch to RyZen from i7 2600k?

BaalRunz

So yeah, I basically couldn't wait and bought the i7 2600k about a week ago for 120$+15$ 1155 board from ebay used. Upgraded from my OLD OLD FX 6300.

And.. the performance difference is insane.

But now, looking at RyZen... I would need to get DDR4, new mobo (pssbly new cooler), and new cpu. Going to be atleast >200$.

All I do is basically game and some unity / game development shit with the Godot engine. Nothing too crazy, and they all have been working fine with my RX 480 / FX 6300  before (except for gaming), but the i7 2600k helped a lot from the FX 6300 for gaming, but I just don't know if I should even get RyZen now... lol.

Dude, Skylake (and to a lesser extent Kaby thanks to 4k Netflix) isn't really worth it from Sandy lol. The only reason I retired my 2500k was because the GFs PC died and so I gave her my old rig and built a new one with a 6700k.

I guess wait for the chip to release and see if it's worth it then.  The rumors say Ryzen IPC will be somewhere around 3rd/4th gen intel so you may not be looking at huge gains as-is, just a bit more future proofing in the new shiny platform.

Ty all.

Yeah, I'm assuming I'll wait for the benchmarks from linus, other big youtubers and see if I can find any of them comparing the i7 2600k with RyZen! Hopefully some people will do that!

Then I guess, just see how much FPS increase it is, and how much $ i would to upgrade and then I get to decide whether it be worth it or not? Anything else to take into consideration?

Not really.  Maybe consider that there's 6 and 8 core versions of Ryzen that may not have a huge fps benefit now but maybe later.  AMDs betting again on good optimization, except this time I think their timing is right for it.  I'm really curious how their 4 core/8 thread cpus will fare to an i7 around your gen.

Sweet. I heard their 4c/8t will be one of the budget gaming CPUs too

Incorrect - they showed it going head to head with Broadwell-E, so I'd say between Devil's Canyon and Skylake in terms of IPC

idk

I may be out-of-date on my knowledge.  Link me some of those benchmarks if you would kind sir.

Either way, we're not talking a huge gap between Devil's Canyon and Skylake.

Pretty much they showed off a 95W 8/16 Ryzen proc vs 6900k (125w 8/16)

idk

Look at Horizon event. They showed blender test there

So let me correct myself, between 4th/5th gen intel. :P

This is gonna be good.

If the wccftech leak is accurate, its single threaded performance is even with Broadwell-E.  That's pretty decisive in games.  But again, we shall wait and see.

It's comparable to the 6950x. Which, in gaming, is comparable to the i5-7600k.

People are expecting too much. There will be much disappointment.

That honestly sounds fine to me considering it's an 8 core/16 thread cpu.  To have the gaming potential of a desktop i5 with the workstation power of an i7-e in an affordable package.  But it's those quad cores I'm more interested in.

Either way you're right.  We should keep the expectates low.  The earlier reports I was hearing about Ryzen honestly sounded more realistic and still competitive.

Yeah, especially since the only benchmarks/demonstrations have been by AMD, once it gets around to all the reviewers we'll see a much wider gamut of tests being thrown at them and then we'll have good info, until then it's still slated for Q1 release last I checked so hardware releases are still exciting. Also the word is that AMD put serious emphasis on single core performance without taking away from their multi core capabilities so if nothing else it should be better than bulldozer xD
