Chances of dead processor?

Looking at a dead machine on Ebay, and the seller says it does not work. It peaked my interest however because it has an i5 4670k inside, for the entire cost of the computer being 1/3rd the price of that processor itself. 

 

"I was wondering about the details of the dead machine you had on hand. Did the machine start at all?  Hello, so it would start for like a split second, the fans would spin and then it would be off. Not even a second that would happen. "

 

 

so this is pretty vague, and I couldn't get any other details from him other than it was a custom built he purchased, as he didn't seem very tech savvy.  It sounds like a power supply/motherboard problem, no?

not PSU, everything seem to be getting power, but might be motherboard/CPU/something else

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Can be either CPU or mobo. No way to know unless you test each independently (source: I'm in the same boat with a Q6600 and a nice Asus mobo)

As for the problem, I suspect it's not PSU actually.  Generally when this goes, hitting the power button will just do nothing at all.

It could be the motherboard or the CPU, you're taking that chance, however if you did buy and it failed it you could always resell it.

Is it local? Shipping would probably make it not worth getting, especially if it's listed on the US website and you don't plan on going south of the 49th to get it.

Well if you do get it, you'll run some diagnosis on it and get to the root of the problem witch on a second though, i don't think it's a dead CPU since again, there's still life in it.

The fact it starts for a split second and then shuts its self down sounds like the CPU or mobo has committed harikari to me. If I was to buy the machine, it would be for the RAM, PSU, GPU, and anything else I could salvage, and then I know I will either get a mobo or CPU too, but not both. 

 

 

EDIT:

 

Also not sounding tech savy is probably to try and catch tech savy people into thinking, "oh this guys an idiot and I could fix that"

What price is it exactly, and what specs does the system have? That will determine if its worth buying or not.

For what is worth my brother bought an used machine, a couple of years back for an extremely low price as well because it apparently was dead, 4gb ram, core 2 quad, gtx 470... and the only problem with the PC was a dead PCI wireless card, he removed it and the machine boot up perfectly fine...

i5 4670k,

8gb DDR3 (already own some confirmed working)

GA-Z97X-SLI (I own a z97 PC mate, no CPU to test) 

HAF 912 (already have a HAF) 

GTX 750 (non TI) 

no harddrive, 

no power supply listed 

 

it seems really tempting considering the z97xSLI is known for failures apparently.

I'm thinking about changing some bulged caps on the motherboard. Maybe I'll get lucky and it's just a power delivery problem due to the caps being shit

I think if I was to buy components like this online, I would have a portable test bench like a Thermaltake V21 inside a luggage case to bring to test out the components before I buy...

Pushing stupid voltages would be more likely to kill the motherboard though wouldn't it?

just stay away from getting older ASUS board is my advice, every single one i have encountred has been shit and i would not touch one made before the 3rd generation of Core I processors, or atleast not if you want to use more then 1 GPU. they are a shitstorm
